DescriptionAn electronic management system supervisesand governs all engine parameters. It optimises performance andfuel consumption by responding in real time to different serviceconditions. The system is managed by a single controlunit that controls the ignition (static and lost spark) and thefuel injection (phased). The system uses signals receivedfrom numerous sensors to control actuators. It is connected to thefollowing systems:fuel supply;air supply:accelerator pedal;engine cooling system;exhaust with catalytic converter;fuel vapour recirculation. On this version, the engine is fitted witha throttle body controlled electronically by the control unit. Specialsoftware inside the control unit computes throttle opening. Thissystem does away with a connection between accelerator and throttlebody. For more details, 3232841Characteristic of working principle1056PETROL INJECTION SYSTEM . The system is also controlled by means ofspecial relays located in the engine compartment near the battery. The supply lines to the control unit andthe various system components (sensors and actuators) are protectedby a specific maxifuse and other jumper fuses located next to thejunction unit.
Functional description The engine control unit M10 monitorsand controls the entire electronic ignition and injection system. The control unit is supplied directly bythe battery via a line protected by maxifuse EFI located on thebattery (connector B99 C ), at pin 4 of connector B of M10 viathe line protected by fuse F5 of the additional fuse box B98A . The ignition-operated power supply(15/54) is received on a line protected by the fuse F4 of the additionalfuse box B98 A, and energizes the main relay J10 which consequentlysends the supply:to pin 2 of connector A of control unit M10 ;to injectors N70 ;to the coils A30 ;to the timing sensor K47 ;to the air flow meter K41 , via the line protectedby the fuse F3 of the additional fuse box B98 A .to the vapour recovery solenoid L10 , again viathe line protected by fuse F3 ;to the heater of the Lambda probes K39 and K40 ,again via the line protected by fuse F3 . The earth of the main relay J10 isprotected by a jumper diode M11 . The ignition-operated power supply (15/54)also supplies - via fuse F4 of B98A - thefuel pump relay J15 , which is excited by a control signal(earth) from pin 29 of connector C of control unit M10 . It supplies power to the fuel pump N40 ,which is earthed through the inertia switch I50 , which cutsoff the circuit in the case of impact to prevent the danger of fuelflowing out. Pins 3, 7 and 8 of connector A of controlunit M10 are earthed and used as references: the first twofor the ignition and the third for the injectors. Pin 8 of connector F is also earthed. The engine control unit M10 receivessignals from the various sensors in order to monitor all engineservice conditions. Rpm sensor K46 supplies informationon engine speed via a frequency signal sent to pins 37 and 38 ofconnector E of control unit M10 . Timing sensor K47 receives a referenceearth from pin 39 of connector E of control unit M10 andsends back a frequency signal corresponding to the timing to pin40 of the same connector. Engine temperature sender unit K36 receivesa reference earth from pin 28 of connector E of control unit M10 andsupplies a signal proportional to the coolant temperature to pin29 of control unit connector E. The same sender unit also suppliesinformation to the temperature gauge and warning light 3234358SeeE4023DASHBOARD CENTRE AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT() . The (first) hot Lambda probe K40 providescontrol unit M10 with information on the correct compositionof the air-fuel mixture in the three cylinders of one head. Thesignal is sent to pin 32 of control unit connector C, while pin31 provides an earth signal. Probe K40 is heated by a resistorin order to ensure it works efficiently even when cold; the resistoris supplied by the relay J10 and receives the heating signalfrom pin 5 of connector A of M10 . Similarly, the second Lambda probe K39 providescontrol unit M10 with information on the correct compositionof the air-fuel mixture in the three cylinders of the other head. The signal is sent to pin 33 of control unit connector C, while pin34 provides a reference earth signal. Probe K39 is heatedby a resistor in order to ensure it works efficiently even whencold; the resistor is supplied by the relay J10 and receivesthe heating signal from pin 1 of connector A of M10 . Knock sensors K50 and K51 provideinformation on knock status via frequency signals sent to pins 42and 44 respectively of control unit connector E. An earth signalis sent from pins 41 and 43 of connector E of M10 respectively. Air flow meter K41 (supplied by relay J10 ) receives a reference voltage from pin 46 of connector E andsends to pin 47 of the same connector a signal proportional to airflow. K41 also contains an air temperature sensor: the sensor referenceearth is supplied by pin 48 of connector E of M10 ,while pin 45 of connector E receives an air temperature signal. Accelerator pedal K55 is fitted withtwo built-in potentiometers (a main one and a safety back-up). Thefirst receives power and earth from pins 22 and 23 respectivelyof connector C of M10 and sends a corresponding signal topin 24 of the same connector. The second receives power and earthfrom pins 27 and 26 respectively of connector C of M10 andsends a corresponding signal to pin 25 of connector C. Pin 14 of connector D of M10 receivesthe signal coming from the brake lights switch I30 , withthe supply controlled by the ignition (INT) from fuse F1 ofthe junction unit B1 . 3233830SeeE2021BRAKE LIGHTS The injectors N70 receive a powersupply to enable opening from main relay J10 . The engine management unit sends commandsto the injectors from pins 25, 13, 1, 26, 14 and 2 of the connector, for cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively. Control unit M10 also controls coils A30 viacontrol signals for the coil primary windings, while the secondarywinding sends a pulse to the spark plugs: pins 20, 6, 17, 13, 19and 5 of connector F control ignition coils 1, 2, 3, 4, 5and 6. The coil A30 main windings receive the go ahead supplyfor opening from the main relay J10 . Throttle body actuator N75 is fittedwith two built-in potentiometers connected in parallel: they controlthrottle opening via a stepper motor. The motor receives information from pins1 and 2 of connector F of M10 . Pin 33 of connector E sendsa power supply to both potentiometers, pin 32 of connector E suppliesan earth signal to the potentiometers, while pins 31 and 34 of thesame connector receive signals from throttle body actuator N75 . Fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10 allowsfuel vapours to pass through to the engine intake where they jointhe mixture entering the combustion chamber. Valve L10 , suppliedby main relay J10 , is opened by the control unit when the engineis under load via a duty-cycle signal from pin 21 of connector Cof M10 . The control unit M10 is connectedto the ALFA ROMEO CODE control unit M20 via a specific serialline from pin 39 of connector C ; in this way if the ALFAROMEO CODE unit does not detect a correct code, it does not issue enablementand the engine is not started 3234721SeeE7010CODE . The control unit is equipped with a self-testsystem that may be used by connecting the unit to connector R10 :this receives indirect signals from control unit M10 viaa serial line from control unit M20 described above. (pin39 of connector C). The self-test system also generates thesignal for the 'injection failure' warning light in the instrument E15 ,which comes from pin 21 of connector F of control unit M10 . The module E15 receives an ignition-controlledsupply (INT) at pin 15 of connector A from the line protected byfuse F4 of the additional fuse box B98 A ; when this earthsignal is received, the 'injection failure' warning light comes on. The speedometer signal (car speed) reachespin 13 of connector D of control unit M10 3234310SeeE4021SPEEDOMETER . The control unit M10 sends out asignal proportional to the engine rpm 3234270SeeE4020REV COUNTER INSTRUMENT frompin 38 of connector C. Control unit M10 is connected tothe air conditioning system via pins 4 and 21 of connector E. Thisallows engine idling speed to be adjusted to increased engine loadwhenever the compressor is activated, or to turn off the compressor inthe case of high speeds or high engine loads 3234652SeeE6021COMPRESSOR ENGAGEMENT . The control unit also controls the enginecooling system: pin 6 of connector A , 3 of connector D and15, 17 of connector E control activation of the relevant fan 3234439SeeE5020ENGINE COOLING . Control unit M10 is connected tothe automatic transmission control unit M55 from pins 11and 12 of connector D ('CAN' lines) 3234832SeeE7050AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION . There is also a supplementary connector R51 forconnection to the control unit, located in the engine bay (connectedto pin 3 of connector B of M10 ). 767This connection is used solelyat the Production Plant and SHOULD UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES be usedduring servicing.

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
