DescriptionThe antilock braking and anti-slip regulationsystems (BOSCH 5.7 ABS with ASR) modulate brake pressure sent tothe wheels to prevent loss of grip under all tyre and road surfaceconditions by cutting in automatically whenever one or both drivewheels begin to slip. The ASR system increases vehicle stabilityand active safety by controlling drive wheel slip. If slip is causedby excessive power transmission, it cuts in to reduce engine powerthrough communication with the engine management control unit. ifslip is detected at a single wheel, the system cuts in to brakethe slipping wheel by acting on the modulation solenoid.ASR comes on automatically whenever theengine is started. The system can be deactivated by operating abutton on the central console. When the system is off, an LED onthe button comes on at the same time as a warning light on the controlpanel (speedometer module). The warning light flashes when the systemcuts in to notifiy the driver that the ASR system has cut in dueto road surface grip conditions. The warning light comes in in fixed modewhen the control unit detects an error in the ASR function. The supply lines to the control unit andthe various system components (sensors and actuators) are protectedby a specific maxifuse and by a fuse located in the additional fusebox.
Functional description ABS electronic control unit M50 issupplied (at pins 2 and 6) directly by the battery via a line protectedby the ABS maxifuse, located directly on the battery A1 -connector C. The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54)reaches pin 23 from the line protected by fuse F6 of theadditional fuse box B98 A . The control unit is earthed via pins 1 and5. The four sensors K70, K71, K75, K76 sendwheel speed signals to pins 12-28, 16-15, 14-13 and 30-31 of M50 respectively. Brake pedal switch I30 sends a 'pedaldepressed' enablement signal to pin 32 of control unit M50 :the ABS cannot intervene unless the brake pedal is pressed. The control unit M50 receives a 'pedal released'signal, always double switch, at pin 20. The 'ASR OFF' control button on panel H35 sendsa deactivation signal to pin 28 of M50 , while pin 27 relaysa signal that turns on an LED on panel H35 when the systemis off. If the control unit M50 detects problemsrelating to the ABS function, it sends the speedometer instrument E10 asignal from pin 22, which lights up the 'ABS failure' warning light;the lighting up of the 'ASR' warning light is also managed via thesame line; if the problems concern the EBD function, the handbrake warninglight is lit up from pin 38 of M50 .; these are earth signals, and they cause the warning lights to come on because the instrument E10 supplyis controlled by the ignition (INT) from the line protected by fuseF4 of the additional fuse box B99B . Pin 37 of M50 produces a speedometersignal (average speed of all four wheels) which is sent to the instrument panel E103234310SeeE4021SPEEDOMETER . The autodiagnostic data can be read by connectingto connector R10 : it receives signals from pin 11 of thecontrol unit M50 via the special diagnostic line. The CAN line that connects M50 (frompins 24 and 40) to M10 allows the ASR function to notifythe engine management control unit of excessive engine power; thisline is not direct, but passes through the steering sensor K583234515SeeE5030PETROL ENGINE ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT , 3234559SeeE5050DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT .
