DescriptionThere are three ashtrays in the car: one is in the centre ofthe dashboard, and two are in the rear doors. The front ashtray is lit when the side lightsare on; it houses a standard power point; the ring round the powerpoint is lit with the side lights on. The cigar lighter resistanceis located in the socket, but it can be used for connection to otherinstruments or equipment (provided they operate at 12 V). To operatethe cigar lighter, simply press the knob: after a few seconds itpops out automatically, ready for use.The socket has a heat protection device:if devices with high energy absorption are connected, this protectioncuts off the supply. The current socket circuit is protectedby a special fuse and is operated by the relay which is excludedwhen the ignition is switched on and is located in the junctionunit. The sockets are only supplied when the ignitionis switched ON.
Functional description The power socket / cigarette lighter P50 is supplied (atpin 2) by the line controlled by the ignition (INT/A) for the relay R1 protectedby the fuse F15 : both are housed in the junction unit B1 . Pin 3 of socket P50 provides theearth from C20 . The ring nut for the power socket is litup (at pin 1) when the side lights are on by means of the line comingfrom the steering column switch unit H5 switch and is protectedby the controls illumination fuse B11 up to 2/99 or fuse F4 of theadditional fuse unit B98B from 2/99. The same supply line with the side lightson also lights up the ashtray light G35 .

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
