DescriptionAn electronic management system supervisesand governs all engine parameters. It optimises performance andfuel consumption by responding in real time to different serviceconditions.The system is managed by a single controlunit which controls both the ignition and the injection.The system uses signals receivedfrom numerous sensors to control actuators. It is connected to thefollowing systems:fuel supply;air supply:accelerator pedal;engine cooling system;exhaust with two preconverters and two catalytic converterscontrolled by four Lambda sensors;fuel vapour recirculation.The throttle body is also controlled electronicallyby the control unit; special software in the engine management controlunit computes throttle opening; this dispenses with the need fora mechanical connection between the accelerator pedal and the throttlebody.Thanks to the electronic management describedabove, this engine conforms to the latest anti-pollution and continuouscontrol regulations in accordance with the EOBD (European On BoardDiagnosis) system; this system allows continuous diagnosis of thecar components relating to emissions, and indicates to the user,by switching on the relevant warning light on the instrument panel, anydeterioration in these components. Functional description The engine control unit M10 monitorsand controls the entire electronic ignition and injection system. The system is supplied directly by the batteryvia a line protected by the maxifuse EFI located on the battery,connector B99 C . The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54)arrives from the line protected by fuse F4 of the additionalfuse box B98 A . The control unit M10 is supplieddirectly by the battery at pin 15 of connector A, via a line protectedby fuse F5 of the additional fuse box B98 A . The supply controlled by the ignition reachespin 47 of connector A, via a line protected by fuse F4 ofthe additional fuse box B98 A . Main injection relay J10 controlsthe entire system: this is excited by a control signal (earth) receivedfrom pin 31 of connector A of control unit M10 and then sends power:to pins 16, 32 and 48 of connector A of the control unit,through the line protected by fuse F3 of the additional fusebox B98 A .to the air flow meter K41 , to the fuel vapour recoverysolenoid L10 and the Lambda sensors K15, K16, K17 and K18 ;(all these lines are protected by fuse F2 of B98 A ).to the injectors N70 and the coils A30 ,via the line protected by fuse F3 , located in the unit B98A . The fuel pump relay J15 receivesa supply controlled by the ignition via fuse F4 , of the additionalfuse box B98 A . It is energized by a control signal (earth)from pin 30 of connector A of control unit M10 and suppliespower to fuel pump N40 , which is earthed through the inertiaswitch I50 , which cuts off the circuit in the case of a crashand so prevents the dangerous spilling of fuel. On the control unit, the earth point C40B is located, which is connected to the engine earth C40 . The engine control unit M10 receivessignals from the various sensors in order to monitor all engineoperating conditions. Rpm sensor K46 provides informationon engine speed via a frequency signal sent to pins 10 and 59 ofconnector B of control unit M10 . These two signals are verylow intensity and are therefore shielded. Timing sensor K47 is supplied frompin 51 of connector B of control unit M10 , receives a referenceearth from pin 26 of connector B and sends a signal of frequencycorresponding to the timing to pin 42 of control unit connectorB. Engine temperature sender unit K36 riceivesa reference earth from pin 26 of connector B of control unit M10 andsupplies a signal proportional to the coolant temperature to pin25 of control unit connector B. The same sender unit also suppliesinformation to the temperature gauge and warning light 3234358SeeE4023DASHBOARD CENTRE AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT() . The three Lambda probes K15, K16,K17 and K18 provide the control unit M10 information concerningthe correct composition of the air-fuel mixture in four differentpositions of the exhaust: two are upstream of the precatalyzers, andtwo are downstream of the catalyzers. The probe K15 , on the right precatalyzer,sends a signal to pin 23 of connector B of M10 , while pin55 supplies the reference earth. Probe K15 is heated by a resistorin order to ensure it works efficiently even when cold. The resistoris supplied by the main relay and receives an earth signal frompin 34 of connector B of control unit M10 . The probe K16 , on the left precatalyzer,sends the signal to pin 39 of connector B of M10 , while pin7 supplies the reference earth. The probe K16 is heated witha resistor, supplied by the main relay, and receives an earth signalfrom pin 2 of connector B of control unit M10 . The probe K17 downstream of the rightcatalyzer (front) sends the signal to pin 28 of connector B of M10 ,while pin 60 supplies the reference earth. The probe K17 isheated with a resistor, supplied by the main relay, and receivesan earth signal from pin 50 of connector B of control unit M10 . The sensor K18 downstream of theleft catalyzer (rear) sends the signal to pin 44 of connector Bof M10 , while pin 12 supplies the reference earth. The probe K17 isheated with a resistor, supplied by the main relay, and receivesan earth signal from pin 18 of connector B of control unit M10 . Knock sensor - 1 K50 provides informationon knock status via a frequency signal sent to pin 22 of connectorB of control unit M10 . It receives a reference earth frompin 54 of connector B. The signals are very low intensity and are thereforeshielded. Knock sensor - 2 K50 provides informationon knock status via a frequency signal sent to pin 6 of connectorB of control unit M10 . It receives a reference earth frompin 38 of connector B. The signals are very low intensity and are thereforeshielded. Air flow meter K41 (supplied by therelay J10 ) receives a reference voltage from pin 63 of connectorA of the control unit, and sends to pin 57 of connector A a signalproportional to the air flow. K41 also contains an air temperature sensor:the sensor reference earth is supplied by pin 25 of connector Aof M10 , while an air temperature signal is received by pin54 of connector A. Accelerator pedal K55 is fitted withtwo built-in potentiometers (a main one and a safety back-up). Thefirst receives power and earth from pins 56 and 24 respectivelyof connector A of M10 and sends a corresponding signal topin 8 of the same connector. The second receives power and earthfrom pins 7 and 25 respectively of connector A of M10 andsends a corresponding signal to pin 40 of connector A. Pin 27 of connector A of M10 receivesthe 'pedal pressed' signal coming from the brake lights switch I30 ,with the supply controlled by the ignition (INT) from fuse F1 ofthe junction unit B1 . Pin 59 of connector A of M10 receivesthe signal coming from the clutch switch I31 (manual gearboxversions only). The control unit M10 dialogues withthe ABS control unit M50 via the CAN line - pins 12 and 29of connector A: the latter signals any irregularities on the ground,distinguished via the speed sensors installed on the individualwheels. In this way the engine management control unit can distinguishbetween variations in driving torque due to irregularities in theroad surface and those due to misfiring in the combustion chambers. Via this CAN line, the control unit M10 alsoreceives the speedometer signal (vehicle speed). Control unit M10 controls the openingof the six injectors N70, via duty cycle signals producedby pins 19 (cyl. 1), 3 (cyl. 2), 20 (cyl. 3), 35 (cyl. 4), 52 (cyl. 5)and 36 (cyl. 6 of connector B of M10 . The control unit M10 also controlsthe coils A30 by means of (earth) signals for the coil primarywindings, whilst the secondary winding sends a pulse to the sparkplugs: from pins 16, 15, 14, 32, 31, 30 of connector B of M10 for cylinders1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively. Throttle body actuator N75 is fittedwith two built-in potentiometers connected in parallel: they controlthrottle opening via a stepper motor. The motor receives information from pins17 - 49 and 1 - 33 of connector B of M10 . Pin 58 of connectorB sends a power supply to both potentiometers, pin 26 supplies anearth signal to the potentiometers, while pins 24 and 41 of the sameconnector receive signals from the throttle body actuator N75 . Fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10 allowsfuel vapours to pass through to the engine intake where they jointhe mixture entering the combustion chamber. Valve L10 isopened by the control unit when the engine is under load via a duty-cyclesignal from pin 2 of connector A of M10 . The control unit M10 is connectedto the ALFA ROMEO CODE control unit via a line from pin 3 of connectorA 3234721SeeE7010CODE . The control unit is equipped with a self-diagnosticsystem that may be used by connecting the unit to connector R10 :this receives signals from pin 53 of connector A from control unit M10 throughthe tester line. The self-test system also produces the signal forthe 'EOBD' warning light in the instrument E15 , which comesfrom pin 46 of the control unit M10 . Control unit M10 sends out a signalproportional to engine rpm 3234270SeeE4020REV COUNTER INSTRUMENT frompin 35 of connector A.
