DESCRIPTION - DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT - Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet

An electronic control system supervises and governs all engine parameters to optimise performance and fuel consumption by means of a real-time response to different operation conditions.Diesel engines are equipped with a COMMON RAIL type injection system. This features the use of an electronically controlled high injection pressure. The supply of fuel, known as the pilot injection, is optimized by the electronic control unit by means of the injector, rather than being managed by the pump.In this 4 valve per cylinder version, the common rail injection system uses Multijet technology: during each engine cycle, in addition to the two normal injections, it carries out two pre-injections (before the piston is at top dead centre), one main one and two post-injections.This solution improves fuel consumption, emissions, noise levels and performance because it allows better control of temperature in the combustion chamber by lowering the maximum value and extending the optimum combustion area.Depending on the signals received from numerous sensors, the control unit controls the injectors connected to it, managing the following systems:fuel supply;air supply;glow plugs;accelerator pedal;engine cooling;emissions control (particulate filter). To respect the latest emission control regulation (EURO 4), the most recent electronic on-board management version is used. This comprises new components (injectors, pressure regulator and high pressure pump, digital flow meter) and a particulate filter. The DPF particulate filter (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a mechanical filter, inserted in the exhaust pipes, which traps the carbon particles present in the exhaust gases on diesel engines. The filter makes it possible to almost totally eliminate the emission of carbon particles in line with current legislation. For further details,The system is also controlled by dedicated relays in the engine compartment junction unit. Lines supplying the unit and various system components (sensors and actuators) are protected by dedicated fuses that are also located inside the engine compartment junction unit.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION - DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT - Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet

Engine management control unit M010 controls and governs the entire electronic ignition and injection system. The control unit M10 is supplied directly by the battery at pin 50 of connector A via a line protected by fuse F18 of the engine compartment junction unit B001 (pin 5 of connector B).The ignition-operated power supply (15/54) arrives via a line protected by fuse F16 of the engine compartment control unit B001 (pin 12 of connector B) to pin 23 of connector A of M010.Pins 1, 2, and 3 of connector A of M010 are connected to the negative battery terminal A001 (connector B). Another injection control unit earth C060 is connected to the case of the same control unit (connector C).The main injection relay T09 of junction unit B001 controls the entire system: its coil, powered directly from the battery via the line protected by fuse F18 of B001, is activated by an earth signal from pin 80 of connector A of control unit M010 and sends the power supplyto pin 5 of connector A of the same control unit (main loads power supply) via a line protected by fuse F17 of B001 (pin 61 of connector B);to pins 4 and 6 of connector A of M010 (injectors power supply) via a line protected by fuse F22 of the same control unit B001 (pin 62 of connector B);to pin 5 of connector B of the same control unit, to EGR solenoid, to the waste-gate solenoid L037 and to glow plug preheating control unit M015, via the line protected by fuse F11 of B001 (pin 60 of connector B).The fuel pump relay T17 from B001 is powered directly from the battery via the line of fuse F21 from the same control unit B001.Its coil, connected to the left front earth C010 via pin 50 of connector B of B001, is activated with a positive signal from pin 85 of connector A of control unit M010 and supplies power to the fuel pump N040.Your car is not equipped for the adoption of the inertia switch; as a replacement, the fuel cut-off function is managed from the Air bag control unit which, after an impact is detected, sends the FPS (Fire Prevention System) signal via the network, allowing the engine control unit M010 to interrupt the fuel flow. This condition is shown by the instrument panel E050 via the general failure warning light and a corresponding message on the display. The engine management control unit M010 receives signals from the various sensors in order to control all engine service parameters. The engine rpm sensor K046 provides engine rpm information via a frequency signal sent to pins 43 and 59 of connector B of control unit M010.Timing sensor K047 is supplied from pin 25 of connector B of control unit M010; it receives a reference earth from pin 21 of connector B, and sends a frequency signal corresponding to the phase to pin 56 of connector B of the control unit.Engine coolant sensor/sender unit K036 receives a reference earth from pin 29 of connector B of engine control unit M010 and sends a signal proportional to engine coolant temperature to pin 54 of the control unit. The airflow meter (debimeter) K041, powered when the ignition is on (15/54) from fuse F87 of control unit B001 (pin 14 of connector B), receives a reference earth from pin 27 of connector B of control unit M010 and sends a signal proportional to airflow to pin 14 of connector B.An air temperature sensor inside K041 also sends an air temperature signal to pin 10 of connector B of M010 .Accelerator pedal K055 contains two built-in potentiometers (a main one and a safety one). The former receives power and earth signals from pins 83 and 35 of connector A of M010 and sends a corresponding signal to pin 65 of the same connector. The latter receives power and earth signals from pins 15 and 32 of connector A of M010 and sends a corresponding signal to pin 41 of the same connector. The water in diesel filter sensor, built into the diesel filter K101 (connector A), powered when the ignition is on (15/54) from fuse F87 of the control unit B001 and connected to the earth via the battery negative terminal A001 (connector B), sends the corresponding signal to pin 90 of connector A of the control unit M010.The fuel temperature sensor, incorporated in the diesel filter K101 (connector B), detects the temperature of the incoming diesel fuel. It receives a reference earth from pin 61 of connector A of control unit M010 and sends a fuel temperature signal to pin 13 of the control unit. The turbocharging sensor K082 measures the pressure in the intake chamber, downstream of the turbocharger. This is supplied by pin 23 of connector B of control unit M010 and receives a reference earth from pin 24 of the same connector. The signal corresponding to the pressure value is sent to pin 41 of connector B of control unit M010.Fuel pressure sensor K083 supplies the injection control unit with a feedback signal to modulate injection pressure and duration. It receives power and a reference earth from pins 8 and 6 respectively of connector B engine control unit M010; it then sends the associated pressure signal to pin 38 of the same connector. The fuel pressure regulator N077, located on the pump, controls the high pressure generated by the pump: both control signals, suitably screened, come from pins 4 and 34 of connector B of control unit M010.EGR solenoid L030 controls exhaust gas recirculation. It is supplied by a line protected by fuse F11 of B001 and is controlled by a signal from pin 15 of connector B of M010.The L037 Waste Gate solenoid modulates the passage of exhaust gas to the turbine: it is supplied by the line protected by the fuse F11 of B001 and is controlled by a signal from pin 30 of connector B of control unit M010.The control unit M10 receives, at pin 9 of connector B, a signal from the minimum engine oil pressure sensor K30.The control unit M010 controls the opening of individual injectors N070, via appropriate signals sent from pins 16-47 (cyl.1), 17-49 (cyl.2), 31-48 (cyl.3), 1-46 (cyl.4) of connector B.The glow plug preheating control unit M015 receives power directly from the battery at pin 1 of connector A via the line protected by fuse F81 of the engine compartment junction unit B001 (pin 24 of connector B) and, at pin 3 of connector B, from the line protected by fuse F11 and governed by the main injection relay T09, both in B001. Pin 1 of connector B of M015 is connected to the negative terminal of battery A001 (connector B).Control unit M015 exchanges the command and control (feedback) signals between pins 2 and 5 of connector B with pins 74 and 70 respectively of connector A of M010, which controls the timing.Connector C of M015 is connected to the spark plug unit A040.Pin 81 of connector A of control unit M010 receives an NO signal from the switch on brake pedal I030, supplied by an ignition-controlled supply (INT) via a line protected by fuse F37 of Body Computer M001. The latter receives the same signal as pin 27 of connector B.Pin 34 of connector B of Body computer M001 receives an NC signal from the switch on brake pedal I030, supplied by an ignition-controlled supply (INT) via a line protected by fuse F51 of the Body Computer. The latter sends this signal via the C-CAN to the control unit M010.At pin 22 of connector A, the control unit M010 receives the signal from the clutch pedal switch I031, which is powered when the ignition is on (INT) from fuse F51 of the Body Computer M001 (pin 25 of connector C).At pin 94 of connector A, the control unit M010 receives the signal from the reversing switch I020, which is powered when the ignition is on (15/54) via the line protected by fuse F87 of control unit B001.Control unit M010 (pins 40 and 64 of connector A) is connected via the C-CAN, to the Body Computer M001 (pins 45 and 44 of connector B) and to the other network nodes; information is sent via this connection for the management of the indicators and warning lights on the instrument panel E050, in particular for the management of:excessive engine coolant temperature gauge and warning light;rev counter;water in diesel filter sensor;heater plugs warning light;minimum engine oil pressure warning light;EOBD failure warning light;general failure warning light, for the failure of the engine oil pressure sensor or the operation of the FPS (Fire Prevention System) function. The control unit M010 receives a speedometer signal generated by the braking system control unit M051 via the C-CAN.It is also connected:from pins 7 and 8 of connector A for managing the engine cooling fans;from pin 55 of connector B, with the alternator A010 for management of the battery charge insufficient/ alternator fault (D+) signal;from pins 10, 37, 79 and 87 of connector A for managing the compressor engagement function;from pins 11, 14, 33, 49 and 91 of connector A, to manage the sensors needed by the particulate filter function.
