The car is fitted with an electronically-controlled safety system which, in the case of a front-end crash of some severity, activates the driver''s and passenger''s Air Bags.In the case of a side impact of a certain magnitude, the side Air Bag is activated (only on the side where the impact has taken place).An electronic control unit manages the entire system by controlling all the components and activating the restraint systems (Air Bags) as necessary.There is an accelerometric sensor on the two front door pillars which, in the case of a side impact, transmits a signal to the control unit.This signal is also processed inside the control unit which, as a result, decides on the operation of the Side Bag on the side where the impact has taken place.The control unit is located under the centre console and is rigidly fixed to the bodyshell: in this way the deceleration sensors located inside it are close to the centre of gravity and detect deceleration for the entire vehicle accurately.The driver''s Air Bag module is located at the centre of the steering wheel; it is fitted on a tilting plate which enables the horn to be operated. The plate houses a metal container which holds the folded air bag and a gas generator that inflates the bag.The passenger Air Bag module is located in the dashboard, above the glove compartment and is fixed directly to the vehicle crossmember by means of a special bracket.The passenger Air Bag can be deactivated manually by means of a specific switch.The switch, which is ignition-activated, is located in the dashboard, on the passenger side and is accessible only with the door open. With the key in the OFF position, the control unit also controls the operation of the special ''passenger Air Bag disabled'' warning light.The side Air Bag is housed in the outer part of the front seat. The sensor is located in the centre pillar.The control unit is self-diagnostic:it detects and memorizes any faultsit recognizes the various components and the type of faultit signals the onset of these faults via the special warning light.System activations following a particularly serious impact are memorized by the control unit.The system control unit supply line is protected by a fuse located in the junction unit under the dashboard.There are different configurations for the Air Bag system (with more or less components) according to the version of the vehicle; the system illustrated is the most complete.

Functional description - AIRBAG - Fiat DOBLO 1.6 16v da 12/03

The control unit for the Air Bag system M60 is controlled by the ignition (INT) at pin 12 of connector A from the line protected by fuse F50 , located in the under-facia junction unit B02 .Pin 11 connector A is earthed.When the control logic detects a frontal impact of a certain severity, the control unit M60 (connector A) sends signals for controlling the operation of the following modules:to the driver''s Air Bag Q09 (from pins 23 and 24);to passenger side air bag Q11 (from pins 19, 20, 21, 22);Pins 7 and 8 of connector A of the control unit M60 are connected to the passenger Air Bag disabling switch H75 .If the passenger Air Bag is disabled, the control unit M60 sends a signal from pin 5 connector A to the instrument panel E50 (pin 14 connector B) to light up the relevant warning light.The side impact detection sensors K66 (driver''s side) and K67 (passenger side) send signals to pins 11 and 12, 9 and 10 of connector B of control unit M60. When the control logic detects a side impact of a certain severity, the control unit M60 (connector B) sends signals for controlling the operation of the following modules:to the driver''s side Air Bag Q30 (from pins 17 and 18);to the passenger side Air Bag Q31 (from pins 19 and 20).All these modules are earthed via pin 3.In the case of a severe impact, the control unit M60 also operates the driver''s seat belt pretensioner (load limter) Q20 (pins 21, 22 connector B) and the front passenger belt pretensioner Q21 (pins 23, 24 connector B).When the autodiagnostic system detects a fault or if an impact is detected, the control unit M60 notifies the diagnostic connector (pin 3 connector B) of the body computer from pin 10 connector A and the instrument panel E50 (pin 13 connector B) from pin 6 of connector A. The instrument panel activates the ''Air Bag failure'' warning light.The supply for the body computer M01 is both controlled by the ignition and direct to pin 11 of connector E (INT) and pin A of connector C of the junction unit under the dashboard B02 .There is a protective fuse F1 for the direct supply located in the engine compartment junction unit B01 .These lines also supply the instrument panel E50 (pins 1 and 3 connector A, respectively) dividing into two inside the junction unit under the dashboard B02. The lines are protected by fuses F37 and F53.Pins 8 and 9 connector D of the body computer M01 are connected to earth. This reference signal is also supplied to the panel (pin 2 connector A) via pin 36 of connector F of the body computer.The diagnostic line is connected to pin 3 connector B of the body computer M01 .
