The vehicle is equipped with an electronically controlled safety system which, in the case of a frontal impact of a certain severity, activates the driver side Air Bag (single activation stage) and the passenger.side air bag (double activation stage). In the case of a fairly serious side impact, the Side Bag (only on the side where the impact took place) is activated. The safety device also includes two pretensioners, one on the driver side and one on the passenger side.An electronic control unit manages the entire system controlling all the components and activating the Air Bag protection systems (airbags and pretensioners) when necessary. An accelerometric sensor on the pillar of both front doors transmits a signal to the control unit in the case of a side impact. This signal is also processed inside the control unit, which may then decide to activate the Side Bags on the side where the impact was detected. The control unit is located under the centre console and is securely fastened to the bodyshell: in this way the deceleration sensors located inside the unit are near the centre of gravity and detect the deceleration for the entire vehicle accurately. The driver side air bag module is located in the middle of the steering wheel. It is fitted on a tilting plate that is also used to control the horns. The plate houses a metal container that contains the folded bag and the gas generation device that inflates the bag.A clock spring allows the connecting cables for the Air Bag module to follow the rotation of the steering wheel without danger of breaking. The passenger Air Bag module is located in the dashboard, above the glove compartment and is fastened directly to the vehicle crossmember through a special bracket. The passenger air bag may be deactivated manually by means of a special switch. The switch that can be operated by means of the vehicle ignition key is located on the passenger side facia and may be accessed only with the door open. With the key OFF the control unit also controls activation of a special "passenger air bag disabled" warning light. The side bag is housed in the external part of the front seat. The associated sensor is located on the central pillar. The control unit is equipped with an autodiagnostic function:- it detects and stores faults;- it recognises the various components and the fault type;- it indicates the onset of faults by means of the special warning light. The activation of the system following a particularly serious impact is memorized by the control unit. The supply line for the system control unit is protected by a fuse located in the junction unit under the dashboard. The airbag system may assume different configurations (with more or fewer components) according to the vehicle specification. The system described is the most comprehensive. The vehicle is equipped with a S.B.R. (Seat Belt Reminder) system consisting of a buzzer that notifies the driver that his seat belt is unfastened complemented by a flashing seat belt unfastened warning light on the instrument panel. For safety reasosn, a buzzer has been installed that reminds the driver to fasten the seat belts. This buzzer does not sound if the seat belts are unfastened with reverse engaged.
The control unit for the Air Bag system M60 receives a supply controlled by the ignition (INT) at pin 8 of connector A from the line protected by fuse F50 of the junction unit under the dashboard B02.Pin 16 of connector A of M60 is earthed. When, on the basis of the control logic, a side impact of a certain severity is detected, the Air Bag control unit M060 (connector B) sends signals for the intervention of the modules:- Driver''s sidebag Q30 (from pins 23 and 24);- Passenger sidebag Q31 (from pins 21 and 22);The cases of Air-Bag sidebag modules Q30 and Q31 are earthed.when driver''s side impact detection sensor K66 and passenger''s side impact detection sensor K67 detect impacts of a certain severit, they send signals to control unit M60 at pins 10 and 9 of connector A.Early Crash sensor K175 located on the front part of the vehicle near the radiator is connected to pin 4 connector A of M60.When, on the basis of the control logic, a side impact of a certain severity is detected, the Air Bag control unit M60 sends signals for the intervention of the modules:- Driver''s side front Air Bag Q09 (from pins 21 and 22 connector A);- Passenger side front Air Bag Q11 (from pins 23, 24 and 20, 19 connector A);- front driver side pretensioner Q20 (at pins 9, 11 connector B);- front passenger side pretensioner Q21 (at pins 10, 12 connector B);The control for exclusion of passenger side Air Bag H75 is connected to control unit M60 at pins 5 and 6 of connector A.If the passenger air bag is disabled, control unit M60 sends a signal from pin 15 connector A to instrument panel E50 (pin 14 connector B) to turn on the warning light.''When the system self-diagnosis detects a fault or if an impact occurs, control unit M60 sends a signal (from pin 11 of connector A) to turn on the airbag system fault warning light located in instrument panel E50 (pin 13 of connector B).Control unit fault diagnosis may be carried out by connecting to conector B pin 3 of body computer M01. This signal (K line) is received from pin 7 of connector A of control unit Air-Bag M60.The body computer M01 receives a supply controlled by the ignition and a direct supply at pins 11 of connector E (INT)and pin A of connector C, respectively for the junction unit under the dashboard B02.Fuse F1 in engine compartment junction unit B01 protects the direct power supply. These lines also supply control panel E50 pins 1 and 3 of connector A (for the Natural Power version - 1596 16V BPW - , pins 1 and 2 connector A) by splitting inside under-dashboard control unit B02.These lines are protected by fuses F37 and F53 of B02.Pins 8 and 9 of connector D of body computer M01 are earthed. This reference earth is also supplied to panel E50 at pin 2 connector A (for the Natural Power version - 1596 16V BPW - , pin 7 connector A) via pin 36 connector F of the body computer.Seat belt control unit M48 emits a buzzer to remind the driver to do up the belt before setting off.Control unit M48 – pin 2 - is supplied with an ignition-controlled supply (INT) via belt buzzer bypass switch J146 via a line protected by fuse F49 of under-dashboard junction unit B02. Pin 1 of M48 is earthed.Body Computer M01 supplies - pin 23 of connector E - a speedometer signal generated by sensor K84 (pin 17 of connector C of M01), at control unit M48 – pin 4 -.Seat belt control unit M48 receives at pin 1 an earth signal from driver side seat belt switch I46. If the seat belt is unfastened a signal leaves pin 3 of M48 to turn on a flashing seat belt unfastened light on instrument panel E50 (pin 15 of connector B) together with a buzzer. If reverse is engaged (by means of reversing switch I20), seat buzzer bypass switch J146 is activated and cuts off power to control unit M48 to bypass the signal device.
