DescriptionThe design of the MTA transmission system for the C514 gearbox fitted on the 1.2 petrol version automates the controls for the clutch and gear lever for a conventional manual gearbox through electro-hydraulic type power assistance. This system:Improves the performance of components of manual mechanical transmission.Avoids the need for the driver to control the clutch pedal and conventional gearchange control.Improves driving safety by the control which prevents driver errors and prevents incorrect manoeuvres of the transmission system.Offers the driver a more advanced vehicle interface. Is a hydraulic power assistance for the gearbox and clutch which preserves all the advantages of a dry clutch and mechanical gearbox (weights, strength and reliability, low energy consumption).Simplifies use and reduces driving fatigue, especially in cities.Ensures comfortable or sporty gear changes thanks to the assistance by advanced control logic.Does not have a clutch pedal in the interior compartment, and the control lever is replaced by electrical 'Up/Down/Neutral/Retro' controls. It can enable automatic gearchange management in 'AUTO' mode (by the driver) in two different logics (ECO/NORMAL).SEMIAUTOMATIC MODE (MANUAL): the driver manages gear engagement via the lever located in the dashboard.AUTOMATIC MODE (AUTO): the decision to change gears is delegated to the electronic system, in accordance with two strategies, the first aiming for driving comfort (NORMAL), the second aiming to limit fuel consumption (ECO).The signals that allow the operation of the system reach the control unit via the CAN (Controller Area Network) and can be grouped together in two main sub-systems, one which includes the data coming from the gearbox area that makes it possible to identify the position of the engagement, the selection, the clutch, the hydraulic kit operating pressure, in addition to the clutch rotation speed, the other which includes all the signals coming from the vehicle systems (e.g. engine, braking system) and which contribute to defining ghe gear change in a way that it precise and can be repeated. The simple request from the lever for a higher gear (by moving the lever towards the '+' symbol) or a lower gear (by moving the lever towards the '-' symbol) allows sporty and fast or smooth and comfortable gear changes to be made. This operating logic is also activated in automatic mode: in this way it is possible to produce a personalized driving style that has smooth driving or saving fuel, especially in urban traffic as the main ojective. These objectives are reached thanks to the implementation of the change by means of a hydraulic system capable of managing the speed of the gear change or the comfort without compromise thereby always ensuring maximum system performance.Having started the engine, pressing the brake pedal confirms the presence of the driver in the driving seat to the system and allows the engagement of first or reverse gear or, on a slippery surface, second gear for setting off.In addition, to guarantee safety and prevent undesired gear change requests, with the engine running, if one of the doors is opened and the driver leaves the driving seat (releasing the accelerator or brake pedal is interpreted as abandoning the vehicle) the system engages neutral. The system anticipates errors that could damage the engine or the gearbox not accepting requests from the driver and signalling the situation by means of warning messages in the multifunction display, the malfunction warning light and two tone horn to advise of emergency situations or remind the driver of a manoeuvre that is not permitted. There are two operating logics available in automatic mode: normal and economy. The use of the former has driving comfort as its aim without adversely affecting the driver's request for snappy gear changes in all conditions, whilst for the economy logic the aim is to achieve the longest gear for the vehicle conditions to ensure that fuel consumption is contained whilst maintaining driveability and driving comfort at maximum levels. In both logics the system lengthens the rotation speed with the engine supplying the maximum torque or power to the higher ratio. When using this mode the system is also capable of recognizing the gradient of the road: a software algorhithm recognizes the increase in gradient and modifies the gear change point so that the compromise between the driver's requirements, the road conditions and the situation of the vehicle (speed and engine rpm) is always optimum.Another feature of the system is recognizing the deceleration of the vehicle and adapting the downwards shift depending on the level of deceleration: in this way in manual mode the system allows a downwards shift when in sports mode the driver request a lower gear to take a curve briskly and in automatic mode it anticipates the downshift to allow the driver to have the most suitable gear available to maintain the comfort level or fuel saving requested.
Functional descriptionThe Selespeed gearbox control unit M054:at pin 27 connector A receives the direct battery supply from the line protected by fuse F32;at pin 28 connector A receives the ignition-controlled supply, from the line protected by fuse F16;at pin 1, 2, is connected to earth C011. During the engine starting stage, the control unit M054 sends a negative signal from pin 42 connector A to the coil for relay T20, housed in the engine compartment junction unit B001. The relay, when energized, closes its internal contact, supplying the starter motor A020 (for more details see SeeE5010 STARTING AND RECHARING ). At pin 76 connector B the Selespeed control unit receives the engine starting signal (+50) supplied by the ignition switch H001.Starting is only permitted if the Selespeed control unit:at pin 74 connector B receives the 'lever in neutral' signal provided by the gear controls unit H037;at pin 69 connector B receives the brake pedal pressed signal, supplied by the N.A. circuit coming from the brake pedal switch I030 (see wiring diagram See E7023 ESP ).If the vehicle is stationary, with a gear engaged, if the Selespeed control unit receives the driver's door open signal at pin 78 connector B, the system automatically engages neutral. The Selespeed control unit receives gear increase signals (pin 26 connector A) and gear decrease signals (pin 68 connector B) via the gear controls unit H037. The gears control unit receives an ignition-controlled supply at pin 6 and an earth reference at pin 1 (the earth reference is supplied by the Selespeed control unit from pin 65 connector B). The shift to AUTO mode takes place via the robotized gearbox AUTO function swithc H034. The signal (referred to earth C011) is sent to pin 77 connector B of control unit M054. The latter, depending on the engine rpm supplied by the engine management control unit M010 (pin 63 connector B) at pin 48 connector A makes provision for the gears at the automatic transmission. From pin 31 connector A, the Selespeed gearbox control unit M054 controls the engagement of the Selespeed gearbox oil pump N047, whose supply is controlled by a specific relay located inside the engine compartment junction unit B001.Control unit M054:from pins 32, 44 connector A controls the gear engagement solenoid valves L051 and L052;from pin 29 connector A it controls the gear selection solenoid valve L053;from pin 43 connector A it controls the clutch control solenoid valve L056;from pins 79, 59 connector B it provides the supply and earth reference, respectively, for the clutch position potentiometer K095 which sends its own signal to pin 52 connector A of the control unit;from pins 73, 66 connector B it provides the supply and earth reference, respectively, for the pressure sensor on the gearbox K096, the gear engagement potentiometer K069 and the gear selection potentiometer K068;at pin 40 connector A receives the signal from the pressure sensor on the gearbox K096;at pin 39 connector A receives the signal from the gear engagement potentiometer K069;at pin 51 connector A receives the signal from the gear selector K068;at pin 38 it provides the supply for the gearbox output speed sensor K077;at pin 50 it receives the signal from the gearbox output speed sensor K077. The buzzer in the instrument panel E050 is activated, from pin 80 connector B, by control unit M054 if there are problems or faulty operation caused by the driver. System problems are indicated by the warning light in the instrument panel coming on; the signal is sent via the C CAN to the body computer node M001 which controls the instrument panel E050 via the B CAN (for more details 2751520SeeE4010INSTRUMENT PANEL ). The Selespeed control unit M054 also has an autodiagnostic function sending its own data from pin 49 connector A to the diagnostic coupling R010 (for more details see SeeE8010 DIAGNOSTIC MULTIPLE CONNECTOR ). The Selespeed control unit communicates via the C CAN from pins 7, 19, 33, 45 connector A (see wiring diagram See E1050 CAN CONNECTION LINES ).
