DescriptionThe car may be fitted with an electronically-controlled safety system that sets off the front seat belt pretensioners and the driver's air bag, passenger air bag and sidebags in the case of frontal and/or side impact of a certain severity. An electronic control unit manages the entire system by controlling all the components and activating the restraint systems (pretensioners and airbags) as necessary. The control unit is located under the centre console and is rigidly fixed to the bodyshell: in this way the deceleration sensors located inside it are close to the centre of gravity and detect deceleration for the entire vehicle accurately. There is an accelerometric sensor on the two front door pillars which, in the case of a side impact, transmits a signal to the control unit. The early crash sensor which detects slight bumps is located at the front on the radiator crossmember.A special occupant classification sensor detects the weight and dimensions of the occupant in the front passenger seat. When a frontal impact of a certain severity (depending on the control strategy from the above two sensors) is detected, the control unit sends control signals for stage 1 operation of the front modules and the front and rear pretensioners. When frontal impact of a certain severity is detected, the control unit sends control signals to set off the stage 2 front modules:In the case of a side impact of a certain severity, the front and rear Side Bags and the Head Bag are activated (only on the side of the car where the impact takes place).767The front passenger module is activated for stage 1 operation if the seat sensor signals a light and/or small occupant. The two front Air Bag modules have two stage operation: the first stage is for slight impacts and the second stage for more severe impacts. The two stages have two separate charges which 'fill' the bag 60% (first stage) and 40% (second stage). The driver's Air Bag module is located at the centre of the steering wheel; it is fitted on a tilting plate which enables the horn to be operated. The plate houses a metal container which holds the folded air bag and a gas generator that inflates the bag. A clock spring device allows the air bag module connection leads to turn with the steering wheel without the risk of breakage. The passenger airbag is located on the facia, above the glove compartment, and is fastened directly to the car crossmember via a special bracket. The passenger Air Bag can be manually deactivated via a special switch - which can be operated by a key - located at the end of the dashboard, passenger side and is only accessible with the door open. With the key in the OFF position, the control unit also controls the operation of the special 'passenger Air Bag disabled' warning light. The Side Bags are housed in the outside of the front and rear seats. The rear Side Bags can be deactivated manually via a special switch that can be operated via the key: it is located in the luggage compartment, on the right hand side. With the key in the OFF position, the control unit also controls the operation of the special 'rear passenger Air Bags disabled' warning light. The Head Bag consists of a curtain bag which inflates and places itself between the head of the occupants and the side windows. The Head Bag folded bag is located under the roof panel, whilst the rear pillar houses the gas generator. The pretensioner is a device built into the front and rear seat belt reels. The control unit is also prepared for sending an emergency signal warning that there has been an impact to the radio-telephone-navigator incorporated in the CONNECT that sends alarm messages. For more details Characteristic of working principle 5580C air bag system . The control unit is self-diagnostic:it detects and memorizes any faultsit recognizes the various components and the type of faultit signals the onset of these faults via the special warning lightSystem activations following a particularly serious impact are memorized by the control unit. The system control unit supply line is protected by a fuse located in the junction unit. When the system self-diagnostic function detects a fault or an impact is detected the control unit sends a signal via the CAN for the Air Bag failure warning light located in instrument panel.Similarly, the passenger Air Bag disabled warning light and the seat belts not fastened warning light are lit up.: this warning light signals that the front seat belts are not fastened. The warning light comes on constantly:at the key on (ignition ON), if the seat belt has not been fastened previously;if the seat belt has been unfastened whilst driving;when the seat belt is fastened, the warning light goes out.The warning light starts to flash and, at the same time, the instrument panel buzzer sounds intermittently for 90 seconds if, with the ignition ON:the speed of the vehicle exceeds 10 km/h after 60 seconds;the speed of the vehicle exceeds 25 km/h;the distance travelled exceeds 500 m;when the seat belt is fastened, the warning light goes out and the buzzer stops. At the end of the 90 seconds, the buzzer stops and the warning light remains on constantly.768
767There are four possible configurations for the system:the 'standard' configuration., supplied as standard, includes front passenger air bags (with key-operated disablement device) and front seat pretensioners;an intermediate configuration, with front passenger air bags, front seat pretensioners and also front seat side bags;a more comprehensive configuration with front passenger air bags, front belt pretensioners and front seat side bags; and also head bags;an even more comprehensive configuration with front passenger air bags, front and rear belt pretensioners, front and rear seat side bags (the latter with key-operated disablement devices) and also head bags.; this is the only configuration equipped with a passenger seat occupied sensor.768
767When operations are carried out to the Air Bag system the recommended safety instructions must be followed precisely.

Functional description The Air Bag system control unit M60 receives a supply controlled by the ignition (INT) at pin 12 of connector A from the line protected by fuse F50 of the additional fuse box B2 . Pin 1 of connector A and pin 17 of connector B are connected to a specific earth C50. Early crash sensor K39 detects slight bumps and reports them to control unit M60 - pins 2 and 4 of connector A of M60 . Occupant classification sensor K65 records the weight and size of the front passenger seat occupant: the sensor is supplied by a line protected by fuse F50 of underfacia control unit B2 , and sends a signal to pin 19 of connector B of M60 . When a frontal impact of a certain severity (depending on the control strategy, data from the above two sensors and sensors incorporated in the control unit) is detected, the control unit sends control signals for stage 1 operation of the front modules:to driver's Air Bag Q9 , via the steering wheel clockspring D47 (from pins 23 and 24 of connector A of M60 ):to passenger side air bag Q11 (from pins 21 and 22 of connector A of M60 ):to the pretensioners on the driver's side Q20 (from pins 1 and 2 of connector B of M60 ) and the passenger side Q21 (from pins 3 and 4 of connector B of M60 ).to driver side rear pretensioners Q22 (from pins 15 and 16 of connector A of M60 ) and passenger side Q23 (from pins 13 and 14 of connector A of M60 );When frontal impact of a certain severity is detected, the control unit sends control signals to set off the stage 2 front modules:to driver's Air Bag Q9 , via the steering wheel clockspring D47 (from pins 19 and 20 of connector A of M60 ):to passenger side air bag Q11 (from pins 17 and 18 of connector A of M60 ): Pin 11 of connector A of M60 receives a signal from passenger air bag disablement switch H75 , supplied from pin 10 of connector A of M60 . The side impact detection sensors K66 (driver's side) and K67 (passenger side) send signals to pins 24, 26, 25 and 27, respectively of connector B of the control unit M60.When side impact of a certain severity (dependent on the software setting) is detected, the control unit sends control signals to set off the modules:to driver's side front air bag Q30 (from pins 6 and 5 of connector B of M60 );to passenger side front air bag Q31 (from pins 9 and 10 of connector B of M60 );to driver's rear side bag Q43 (from pins 13 and 14 of connector B of M60);to passenger side rear air bag Q42 (from pins 15 and 16 of connector B of M60 );to the driver's Head Bag Q40 (from pins 7 and 8 of connector B of M60 );to the passenger Head Bag Q41 (from pins 12 and 11 of connector B of M60 ). The seat structure that houses the side bags is connected to earth C50 . A signal from passenger Air Bag disabling switch H76 reaches pin 30 of connector B of M60 supplied by pin 31 of connector B of M60 Switches on front seat belts I45 and I46 inform the control units if any seat belts are unfastened, by connecting to pins 20, 22 and 21, 23 of connector B of M60 . When the system self-diagnostic function detects a fault or an impact is detected, control unit M60 sends a signal -from pin 8 of connector A - to the Air Bag faulty warning light located in the instrument panel E50 .; pin 7 of connector A of M60 sends the signal for the 'passenger disabling' warning light. pin 23 of connector B sends a rear air bag disablement warning lgiht signal, and lastly pin 9 of connector A of M60 sends a seat belt unfastened warning light signal. Self-diagnostic data can be read by connecting the unit to connector C of Body Computer M1 - pin 3: it arrives via the special diagnostic line. The crash signal from pin 5 of connector A of the control unit M60 is sent to pin 13 of connector F of the integrated radio-telephone-navigator P20 .
