DescriptionAn electronic management system supervisesand governs all engine parameters. It optimises performance andfuel consumption by responding in real time to different service conditions. The system is managed by a single controlunit which controls both the ignition and the injection. The system uses signals receivedfrom numerous sensors to control actuators. It is connected to thefollowing systems:fuel supply;air supply system;engine cooling;control of combustion - Lambda sensorscontrol of exhaust with catalytic silencer.fuel vapour recirculation. Thanks to the electronic management describedabove, this engine conforms to the latest anti-pollution and continuouscontrol regulations in accordance with the EOBD (European On BoardDiagnosis) system; this system permits continuous diagnosis of the vehiclecomponents relating to emissions, and indicates to the user, byswitching on the relevant warning light on the instrument panel, any deterioration in these components. For greater detail, see 2427377Characteristic of working principle1056PETROL INJECTION SYSTEM . The system is also controlled by means ofspecial relays located in the engine compartment unit; the supplylines to the control unit and the various system components (sensors andactuators) are protected by special fuses, also located in the enginecompartment.
Functional description The engine control unit M10 monitorsand controls the entire electronic ignition and injection system. The control unit M10 is supplieddirectly by the battery at pin 4 of connector A, via a line protectedby fuse F18 of the unit B1 . The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54)reaches pin 17 of connector A of M10 from the line protectedby fuse F16 of the engine compartment unit B1.The main injection relay T9 of B1controls the entire system: this is excited by a control signal(earth) received from pin 6 of connector A of control unit M10 andthen sends power:to the injectors N70 and the coils A30 ,via the line protected by fuse F17 of B1 .to the fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10 and theLambda sensors K15 and K17 via a line protected byfuse F11 of B1to the fuel pump N40 via the line protected by fuseF22 of B1; the pump is earthed via inertia switch I50. Incase of impact, this cuts off the circuit to prevent the dangerof fuel delivery. The engine control unit M10 receivessignals from the various sensors in order to monitor all engineservice conditions. Rpm sensor K46 provides information onengine speed via a frequency signal sent to pins 35 and 25 of connectorB of control unit M10: these two signals are very low intensityand are therefore shielded, pin 34 of connector B of M10. Timing sensor K47 is supplied from pin32 of connector B of control unit M10; It receives a referenceearth from pin 20 of connector B and sends a frequency signal corresponding tothe timing to pin 24 of M10. The integrated air temperature sensor K43receives a reference earth from pin 29 of connector B; it sendsa signal corresponding to the intake air temperature to pin 14 ofthe control unit. A reference supply is sent from pin 22 of connectorB of M10 to the sensor K43 which restores a signal, to pin 13,proportional to the pressure of the intake air. The throttle position sensor K56 is suppliedfrom pin 32 of connector B of M10; it receives a reference earthfrom pin 20 fo connector B and sends a signal proportional to theopening of the throttle to pin 3 of connector B of M10. The engine temperature sensor K36 receivesa reference earth from pin 29 of connector B of the control unit M10 andsupplies a signal proportional to the temperature of the engine coolantto pin 5 of the control unit. The detonation sensor K50 provides informationconcerning the onset of detonation in the combustion chamber throughfrequency signals: it sends two signals to pins 6 and 15 of connectorB of M10; these signals are also suitably shielded, pin 8 ofconnector B of M10. The Lambda sensor at the pre-catalyzer K15 andthe one at the catalyzer K17 provide the control unit M10 withinformation concerning the correct composition of the air/fuel mixture: The sensor K15 sends a signal topin 22 of connector B of the control unit, whilst pin 32 providesthe reference earth: the intensity of these two signals is extremelylow and therefore they are appropriately shielded. Sensor K15 isheated by a resistor in order to ensure it works efficiently evenwhen cold; the resistance is supplied by the main relay T9 ;pin 11 of connector B of M10 provides the reference earth. The sensor K17 sends a signal to pin31 of connector B of the control unit, whilst pin 21 provides thereference earth: the intensity of these two signals is extremelylow and therefore they are appropriately shielded. Probe K17 isheated by a resistor in order to ensure it works efficiently evenwhen cold; the resistance is supplied by the main relay T9 ;pin 1 of connector B of M10 provides the reference earth. The control unit M10 controls theopening of the injectors N70 via special signals sent frompins 51, 18, 2 and 34 of connector B of M10 . The injectors N70 receivea power supply to enable the opening from the main relay T9 of B1 . The control unit M10 also controlsthe coil A30 through the signals for the coil primary winding, whilst the secondary winding sends a pulse to the spark plugs: frompins 32, 16, 31, 15 of connector B of M10 . The coil A30 primarywindings receive a signal to enable opening from the main relay T9 of B1 . The idle actuator N74 regulates the throttleby-pass line. It is controlled by the control unit M10 throughthe signals from pins 17-19 and 9-18 of connector B of M10 . Fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10 allowsfuel vapours to pass through to the engine intake where they jointhe mixture entering the combustion chamber. Valve L10 is suppliedby the main relay T9 of B1 ; it is opened by the controlunit when the engine is loaded by a signal from pin 26 of connectorB of M10. The control unit M10 receives the signalfor the minimum engine oil pressure sensor K30 at pin 23 of connectorB.The control unit M10 is connectedvia the CAN network - pins 20 and 29 - to the Body Computer M1and the other nodes on the network: through this connection, itsends information concerning:system self-test, which can be used by connecting to connectorC of M1 .engine water temperature, which is sent to the instrumentpanel E50 which manages the relevant gauge and warning light;rpm, which is sent to the rev counter of the instrumentpanel E50 ;engine oil minimum pressure, which is sent to instrumentpanel E50 which manages the relevant warning light; It receives, via CAN, the speedometer signalgenerated by the ABS control unit M50 The self-test system of the control unit M10also generates a signal - which comes from pin 13 of connector A- which is connected directly to the 'EOBD' warning light located inthe instrument panel E50. The check function inside the instrumentpanel E50 also controls the intervention of the inertia switch, any faults in the engine temperature sensor and the oil pressuresensor: if faults are detected, the 'fault' warning light is switchedon. The self-test data can be read by connectingto connector C of the Body Computer M1 - pin 7: it receives thesignals from pin 13 of connector A from the control unit M10 viathe specific tester line.
