DescriptionThe Electrical Power Steering (EPS) system reduces the effortrequired to steer the car by using the torque produced by an electricmotor. An electronic control unit manages and controlsthe system: by processing the incoming information and using a presetoperating logic the control unit determines the direction of rotationand the supply current for the electric motor producing the desiredpower-assisted effect. It is possible, using the special CITY buttonlocated in the control panel in the centre of the dashboard,to alterthe level of power assistance for the electric steering. On the instrument panel, there is the electricpower steering fault warning light; The special 'fault' warninglight comes on if there is a problem with the system. The control unit supply lines are protectedby a special maxifuse located in the engine bay control unit. ignition-operatedpower supply from a special fuse in the engine compartment controlunit.767 a sensor which detects the positionof the steering wheel (steering sensor used by the ABS system forthe ESP function) is incorporated in the electric steering controlunit 2428122SeeE7023ESP .
Functional description The electric power steering control unit M86 monitors andcontrols the entire electric driving system electrically. The control unit is supplied directly bythe battery via a line protected by fuse F2 of the engine compartmentjunction unit B1 at pin A of connector A of M86. Pin B ofconnector A of M86 is earthed. The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54)reaches pin 1 of connector B of M86 from the line protected byfuse F24 of the engine compartment junction unit B1. Control unit M86 is connected to theCAN network - pins 2, 3, 7 and 8 of connector B with the other nodes, particularly Body Computer Node M1 and instrument panel E50, to whichthe signals for the 'DUALDRIVE failure' warning light are sent. The CITY mode (less effort to turn the wheel)selection button is located in the control panel in the centre ofthe dashboard H90 and is connected to control unit M86 via the CANnetwork throgh Body Computer M1, pin 19 of connector D. Self-diagnostic data can be read by connectingthe unit to connector C of Body Computer M1 - pin 11 of connectorH: this receives signals from pin 4 of connector B of M86 SeeE8010 DIAGNOSTIC MULTIPLE CONNECTOR .
