DescriptionThe check module in the centre, behind the steering wheel, includes:the check device for the doors and boot and a series of warninglights. The doors check device detects if one ofthe doors or boot is open and lights up the LED and the ideogramof the whole car. In addition, all the LEDs come on for about 4seconds when the ignition is switched ON to check that they areworking properly, and then they go out.The following warning lights arecontained in this module:"Air Bag failure""ABS failure""insufficient brake fluid level" and "handbrakeapplied""CODE failure"The insufficient brake fluid level and thehandbrake applied warning light comes on, upon a command from theABS control unit., together with the ABS failure warning light,to indicate a fault in the EBD braking system. If, on the other hand, it comes on by itself, the brake fluid level is low or the handbrake is on.The operation of the warning lights whichare not included in other functions is illustrated; the others aredescribed and illustrated in the diagrams relating to the componentsto which they refer. The check instrument operates when the ignitionis switched ON.
Functional description The supply for the check module E30 reaches pin 2 directlyfrom the battery. (maxifuse J/B1 of B5 up to 2/99or of B99 from 2/99 ) through fuse F10 of the junctionunit B1 ; the supply controlled by the ignition (INT) reachespin1 from the line protected by fuse B11 up to 2/99 or fuse F4 ofthe additional fuse box B98B from 2/99. Pin 3 is earthed. Pins 8, 9, 11 and 10 of instrument E20 areconnected to the switches at the locks of the front doors (connectorC of N50 and N51 ) and the rear doors (connector Bof N55 and N56 ), respectively and signal if any ofthe doors is open. The boot opening switch I11 is connectedto pin 12. The signals for the handbrake switch I40 andbrake fluid level sensor K25 both reach pin 13 of E30 . For all the other warning lights, referto the diagrams relating to the components to which they refer.

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
