DescriptionAn electronic management system supervisesand governs all engine parameters. It optimises performance andfuel consumption by responding in real time to different serviceconditions. The system is managed by a single controlunit that controls the twin spark ignition (static and lost spark),and the injection (phased). The system uses signals receivedfrom numerous sensors to control actuators. It is connected to thefollowing systems:fuel supply;air supply:accelerator pedal;engine cooling system;exhaust with catalytic converter;fuel vapour recirculation. On this version, the engine is fitted witha throttle body controlled electronically by the control unit. Specialsoftware inside the control unit computes throttle opening. Thissystem does away with a connection between accelerator and throttlebody. The control unit also controls the hydraulicvariable valve timing - an exclusive system adopted on T. SPARKengines. This version is also characterized by theadoption of a variable geometry inlet system, managed by the fuelinjection control unit in accordance with the engine's operatingconditions. For more details, 3232841see DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION:1056PETROL INJECTION SYSTEM . The system is also controlled by means ofspecial relays located in the engine compartment near the battery. The supply lines to the control unit andthe various system components (sensors and actuators) are protectedby a specific maxifuse and other jumper fuses located next to thejunction unit.
Functional description The engine control unit M10 monitorsand controls the entire electronic ignition and injection system. The system is supplied directly by the batteryvia a line protected by the maxifuse EFI located on the battery, connector B99 C . The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54)arrives from the line protected by fuse F4 of the additionalfuse box B98 A . The control unit M10 is supplieddirectly by the battery at pin 15 of connector A, via a line protectedby fuse F5 of the additional fuse box B98 A . The supply controlled by the ignition reachespin 47 of connector A, via a line protected by fuse F4 ofthe additional fuse box B98 A . Main injection relay J10 controlsthe entire system: this is excited by a control signal (earth) receivedfrom pin 31 of connector A of control unit M10 and then sends power:to pins 16, 32 and 48 of connector A of the control unit, through the line protected by fuse F2 of the additional fusebox B98 A .to air flow meter K41 , to fuel vapour recoverysolenoid L10 , to variable geometry control solenoid L15 ,to variable valve timing actuator N76 and lambda probe K40 ;(all these lines are protected by fuse F2 of B98 A ).to the fuel injectors N70 , via the line protectedby the fuse F3 , located in the unit B98 A ; the fuel pump relay J15 receivesa supply controlled by the ignition via fuse F4 , of the additionalfuse box B98 A . It is excited by a control signal (earth)from pin 30 of connector A of control unit M10 and suppliespower to fuel pump N40 , which is earthed through the inertiaswitch I50 , which cuts off the circuit in the case of a crashand so prevents the dangerous spilling of fuel. It also supplies power to the ignition coils A30 . The engine control unit M10 receivessignals from the various sensors in order to monitor all engineoperating parameters. Rpm sensor K46 provides informationon engine speed via a frequency signal sent to pins 10 and 59 ofconnector B of control unit M10 . These two signals are verylow intensity and are therefore shielded. Timing sensor K47 is supplied frompin 51 of connector B of control unit M10 , receives a referenceearth from pin 26 of connector B and sends a signal of frequencycorresponding to the timing to pin 42 of control unit connectorB. Engine temperature sender unit K36 riceivesa reference earth from pin 26 of connector B of control unit M10 andsupplies a signal proportional to the coolant temperature to pin25 of control unit connector B. The same sender unit also suppliesinformation to the temperature gauge and warning light ( 3234358SeeE4023DASHBOARD CENTRE AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT() ). Hot lambda probe K40 provides controlunit M10 with information on the correct composition of theair-fuel mixture. The signal is sent to pin 23 of connector B of M10 ,while pin 55 provides a reference earth signal. Probe K40 isheated by a resistor in order to ensure it works efficiently evenwhen cold. The resistor is supplied by relay J10 and receivesan earth signal from pin 34 of connector B of control unit M10 . Knock sensor K50 provides informationon knock status via a frequency signal sent to pin 22 of connectorB of control unit M10 . It receives a reference earth frompin 54 of connector B. The signals are very low intensity and aretherefore shielded. Air flow meter K41 (supplied fromrelay J10 ) receives a reference voltage from pin 63 of connectorA and sends pin 57 of connector A a signal proportional to air flow. K41 also contains an air temperature sensor: the sensor reference earthis supplied by pin 25 of connector A of M10 , while an airtemperature signal is received by pin 54 of connector A. Accelerator pedal K55 is fitted with twobuilt-in potentiometers (a main one and a safety back-up). The firstreceives power and earth from pins 56 and 24 respectively of connectorA of M10 and sends a corresponding signal to pin 8 of thesame connector. The second receives power and earth from pins 7and 25 respectively of connector A of M10 and sends a correspondingsignal to pin 40 of connector A. Pin 274 of connector A of M10 receivesthe signal coming from the brake lights switch I30 , withthe supply controlled by the ignition (INT) from fuse F1 ofthe junction unit B1 ( 3233830SeeE2021BRAKE LIGHTS ). Control unit M10 controls the openingof individual injectors N70 via duty cycle signals producedby pins 19 (cyl. 1), 52 (cyl. 2), 35 (cyl. 3) and 3 (cyl. 4) ofconnector B of M10 . Injectors N70 receive a power supplyto enable opening from main relay J10 . Control unit M10 also controls coils A30 viacontrol signals (earth) for the coil primary windings, while thesecondary winding sends a pulse to the spark plugs: from pins 16and 14 of connector B for cylinder pair 1-4 and from pins 30 and31 of connector B of M10 for cylinders 2-3. The primary windings of the coils A30 receivea signal to enable opening from main relay J15 . Throttle body actuator N75 is fittedwith two built-in potentiometers connected in parallel: they controlthrottle opening via a stepper motor. The motor receives information from pins17 - 49 and 1 - 33 of connector B of M10 . Pin 58 of connectorB sends a power supply to both potentiometers, pin 26 supplies anearth signal to the potentiometers, while pins 24 and 41 of the sameconnector receive signals from the throttle body actuator N75 . Fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10 allowsfuel vapours to pass through to the engine intake where they jointhe mixture entering the combustion chamber. Valve L10 , suppliedby main relay J10 , is opened by the control unit when the engineis under load via a duty-cycle signal from pin 5 of connector Bof M10 . Variable geometry solenoid L15 iscontrolled from pin 4 of connector B of control unit M10 . Variable valve timing system N76 controlsintake advance mechanically: it is controlled by pin 36 of controlunit connector B. Control unit M10 is connected tothe ALFA ROMEO CODE control unit via a line from pin 3 of connectorA ( 3234721SeeE7010CODE ). The control unit is equipped with a self-testsystem that may be used by connecting the unit to connector R10 :this receives signals from pin 52 of connector A of control unit M10 throughthe tester line. The self-test system also produces the signalfor the "injection failure" warning light in the instrument E15 , which comes from pin 46 of the control unit M10 . The module E15 receives an ignition-controlledsupply (INT) at pin 15 of connector A from the line protected byfuse F4 of the additional fuse box B98 A ; when this earthsignal is received, the "injection failure" warning lightcomes on. The speedometer signal (vehicle speed) reachespin 44 of connector A of the control unit M10 ( 3234310SeeE4021SPEEDOMETER ). Control unit M10 sends out a signalproportional to engine rpm ( 3234270SeeE4020REV COUNTER INSTRUMENT )from pin 35 of connector A. Control unit M10 is connected tothe air conditioning system via pins 6 and 13 of connector A. Thisallows engine idling speed to be adjusted to increased engine loadwhenever the compressor is activated, or to turn off the compressor inthe case of high speeds or high engine loads ( 3234652SeeE6021COMPRESSOR ENGAGEMENT ). The control unit also controls the enginecooling system: pins 9, 41, 50 and 62 of connector A control activationof the relevant fan ( 3234439SeeE5020ENGINE COOLING ). Control unit M10 is connected tothe gearbox control unit (SELESPEED) M54 via pins 12 and29 of connector A ("CAN" lines). ( 3234832SeeE7050AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION )

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
