DESCRIPTION - PARKING SENSOR - Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet

The parking assistance system provides the driver with information, whilst reversing, on the distance from any objects behind the vehicle which could be out of their range of view. The information of the presence/distance of an obstacle is transmitted to the driver by means of acoustic warnings whose frequency depends on the distance of the vehicle from the obstacle. An electronic control unit activates and controls the operation of the sensors located in the rear bumper, processes the signals received and operates the buzzer in the instrument panel. The system is activated with reverse gear engaged: in these conditions, the control unit energizes the transducers and sends them a signal request, receiving the response signals. The reversing light activation signal is acquired by the engine control unit and sent via the CAN network to the Body Computer that forwards it via the CAN network to the parking sensor control unit. The sensors use ultrasound technology and act as intelligent transmitters/receivers with triangulation technology. they allow improved detection in critical situations or in the presence of small obstacles. The impulses emitted are reflected by any obstacles; the transducer receives an echo which is converted into a digital signal and sent to the electronic control unit. The signalling of the distance of the obstacle is achieved through intermittent impulse sound signals: the frequency of this signal increases gradually as the bumper approaches an obstacle: When the distance calculated goes below 30 cm, the sound becomes high pitched and constant; the acoustic signal stops when the distance of the obstacle increases.767The distance measurement only takes place when the system is activated, whilst only the control unit is operational in the inactive state. The engagement of the connection for the tow hook (if fitted) deactivates the entire system. The control unit is equipped with a self-diagnostic function: when switched on the control unit carries out an initial test on the sensors which are then continuously subject to fault diagnosis during the operation of the system. A fault in only one sensor inhibits the operation of the entire system: in this case the system excludes itself and sends a fault message. The failure state is signalled at the instrument panel with the general failure warning light coming on and a signal from the buzzer. The system is supplied by an ignition-operated circuit (INT) protected by a specific fuse in the Body Computer.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION - PARKING SENSOR - Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet

The parking sensor control unit M084 receives a power supply, at pin 1 of connector A, from the ignition-controlled line (INT) protected by fuse F49 located in the Body Computer (pin 14 of connector F). Pin 8 of connector A of M084 is connected to the right rear earth C031.The Body Computer M001 receives a direct battery power supply (pin 1 of connector A) protected by fuse F01 of the engine compartment junction unit B001 (pin 18 of connector B); it also receives an ignition-controlled power supply (INT) at pin 11 of connector E.The Body Computer M001 is also connected to the driver''s dashboard earth C015 via pins 9 and 10 of connector E.The control unit M084 is connected, from pins 7 and 14 of connector A, via the B-CAN, to the Body Computer M001 (pins 34 and 49 of connector F) from where it receives information that reverse gear is engaged, received, in turn, via the C-CAN (pins 44 and 45 of connector B) from the engine management control unit M010.At pin 5 of connector A the parking sensor control unit M084 receives any input relating to the presence of a trailer, an input which disables the function.Having received information that reverse gear is engaged, the parking sensor control unit M084 activates the parking sensors and communicates the information, via the B-CAN, relating to the activation of the buzzer incorporated in the instrument panel E050.The four parking sensors K097 (pin 2) send a signal to connector B of the control unit M084: pins 5, 3, 2 and 4 are, in effect, connected to sensors K097A (left outer), K097B (left inner), K097C (right inner) and K097D (right outer) respectively. The sensors receive a power supply (pin 1) respectively from pin 12 of connector B of control unit M084 and a reference earth (pin 3) from pin 1 of the same connector.Any faults are signalled, via the B-CAN, through the general failure" warning light in the instrument panel E050.
