An electronic control system supervises and governs all engine parameters to optimise performance and fuel consumption by means of a real-time response to different service conditions. The system is managed by a single control unit which controls both ignition and injection.Depending on the signals received from numerous sensors, the control unit controls the injectors connected to it managing the following systems:- fuel supply;- air supply;- accelerator pedal;- engine cooling;- control of combustion - Lambda sensors;- control of exhaust with catalytic converter.- fuel vapour recirculation. The throttle body is also controlled electronically by the control unit: throttle opening is calculated in accordance with specific software mapped inside the engine control unit. This system does away with the need for a mechanical link between accelerator pedal and throttle body. The electronic management system described above ensures that this engine meets the very latest EOBD (European On Board Diagnogis) system emission control and monitoring requirements. This system allows continous diagnosis of emission-related car components and notifies the driver if any of the components should deteriorate by turning on a warning light in the instrument panel. For more details,The system is also controlled by dedicated relays in the engine bay control unit. Lines supplying the control unit and various system components (sensors and actuators) are protected by dedicated fuses that are also located inside the engine bay.
Engine management control unit M10 controls and governs the entire electronic ignition and injection system. The control unit M10 receives a direct supply from the battery at pin 16 of connector A via the line protected by fuse F18 of engine compartment unit B1.The ignition-operated power supply (15/54) arrives via a line protected by fuse F16 of the engine compartment junction unit B1 at pins 12 and 29 of connector A of M10 .Pins 5, 6, 21 and 22 of connector B of M10 are earthed. The main injection relay F9 of B01 controls the entire system: it is energized by an earth signal from pin 62 of connector A of engine control unit M10 and then forwards a power supply:- to injectors N70 and coils A30 via a line protected by fuse F22 of B01.- to the fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10, to lambda sensors K15 and K17, variable valve timing K98 and to speedometer generator K84 via a line protected by fuse F11 of B01.Fuel pump relay R10 of B01 is supplied by the line protected by fuse F21 of B01.This is energized by a command signal (positive) from pin 13 of connector A of control unit M10 and supplies power to fuel pump N40 , which is earthed via inertia switch I50 , that cuts off the circuit in the case of impact and thus prevents dangerous flows of fuel. The engine management control unit M10 receives signals from the various sensors thereby keeping all the engine operating parameters under control. The rpm sensor K46 provides information, via a frequency signal sent to pins 9 and 23 of connector B of the control unit M10, about the engine speed.Timing sensor K47 is supplied from pin 13 of connector B di M10 ; this receives a reference earth from pin 7 of connector B, and sends a signal with frequency corresponding to the phase to pin 24 of connector B of M10.Absolute pressure sensor K44 receives a reference earth from pin 7 of connector B; while pin 13 of connector B of M10 sends out a reference power supply:Sensor K44 supplies pin 63 connector B of engine control unit with the air temperature and pin 31 connector B of the engine control unti with pressure.Atmospheric pressure sensor K48 is supplied from pins 7 and 13 of M10 connector B and supplies pin 61 of control unit M10 with an atmospheric pressure measurement. The engine temperature sender unit K36 receives a reference earth from pin 36 of connector B of the control unit M10 and provides a signal proportional to the temperature of the engine coolant at pin 45 of connector B of the control unit. The detonation sensor K50 provides information, by means of frequency signals, concerning the onset of detonation in the combustion chamber: it sends two signals to pins 41 and 48 of connector B of M10 :The Lambda sensor on the pre-catalyzer K15 and the one on the catalyzer K17 provide the control unit M10 with information concerning the correct composition of the air-fuel mixture. The sensor K15 sends a signal to pin 43 of connector B of the control unit, while pin 60 provides a reference earth: Sensor K15 is heated by a resistance to ensure correct operation even when cold; the resistance is supplied by the main relay R9; pin 32 of connector B of M10 provides the reference earth. The sensor K17 sends a signal to pin 42 of connector B of the control unit, while pin 58 provides a reference earth: Sensor K17 is heated by a resistance to ensure correct operation even when cold; the resistance is supplied by the main relay R9 pin 64 of connector B of M10 provides the reference earth.Variable valve timing solenoid K98, supplied by main relay R9 of B01 and protected by fuse F11, is excited via a signal from pin 2 of connector B of M10.The accelerator pedal K55 has two built in potentiometers (one main one and one safety one). The former receives power and earth signals from pins 2 and 46 of connector A of M10 and sends a corresponding signal to pin 42 of the same connector. The latter receives power and earth signals from pins 3 and 15 of connector A of M10 and sends a corresponding signal to pin 40 of the same connector.Pin 35 of connector A of M10 receives the N.A. positive signal coming from the brake lights switch I30 with an ignition-controlled supply (INT) from fuse F37 of junction unit B02.Pin 34 of connector A of M10 receives the N.C. positve signal coming from the brake lights switch I30 with an ignition-controlled supply (INT) from fuse F35 of junction unit B02.Pin 50 of connector A of M10 receives and earth signal coming from the clutch switch I31.The control unit M10 controls the opening of the injectors N70 by means of special signals sent by pins 50, 34, 49 and 33 of connector B of M10.Injectors N70 receive power from a line protected by fuse F22 located in junction unit B01.Control unit M10 also controls coils A30 from pins 17, 19, 3 and 1 of connector B via control signals for the respective primary windings while the secondary windings sent a pulse to the spark plugs. The primary windings of coils A30 are supplied by main relay R9 of B01 and protected by fuse F22.The throttle body actuator N75 has two built in potentiometers connected in parallel: this controls throttle opening by means of a stepping motor. The motor receives a power supply from pins 57 and 52 of connector B of M10. Pin 15 of connector B sends power to both potentiometers, while pin 35 sends an earth signal to the potentiometers; pins 44 and 30 of the same connector receive signals that reach throttle body actuator N75The fuel vapour recovery solenoid valve L10 allows the flow of fuel vapours to the engine intake where they are added to the mixture entering the combustion chamber. Valve L10 is supplied from main relay R9 of B01 is protected by fuse F11; it is opened by the control unit when the engine is loaded via a signal from pin 51 of connector B of M10 .The control unit M10 receives - at pin 7 of connector A - a negative signal from the minimum engine oil pressure sensor K30Information on engine coolant temperature is sent to instrument panel E50, which manages the gauge and warning light. The engine rpm and minimum engine oil information are also sent to instrument panel E50, which manages the rev counter and the relevant warning light. The speedometer signal generated by speedometer sennsor K84 reaches the body computer at pin 17 connector C of Body Computer M01.The self-diagnostic system of control unit M10 communicates via the CAN line with the instrument panel to indicate faults. The check function inside instrument panel E50 controls faults in the oil pressure sensor: If faults are detected, the general failure warning light is turned on and the information is shown simultaneously on the display. The autodiagnostic data can be read by connecting to connector B of the Body Computer M01 - pin 7 connector B -: it receives signals from pin 10 of connector A of control unit M10 via the special diagnostic line.
