Automotive Electricians Portal FZCO Location of componentsComponents DescriptionThe car is fitted with an electronically-controlled safety system which, in the case of a front-end crash of some severity, activates the driver's and passenger Air Bags.In the case of a side impact of a certain magnitude, the corresponding side Air Bag is activated (only on the side where the impact has taken place).The electronic control unit manages the entire system, checking all the components and when necessary activating the Air Bags.The control unit is situated on the floor in a central position under the dashboard, and is secured rigidly to the bodywork; in this way the deceleration sensors located inside it are near the baricentre and can detect precisely the deceleration of the entire car.There is an accelerometric sensor at the base of the two front door pillars which, in the case of a side impact, transmits a signal to the control unit.The driver's Air Bag module is located in the centre of the steering wheel; it is fitted on a rocker plate which allows the operation of the horns. The plate houses a metal container which holds the folded airbag and a gas generator that inflates the bag. A clockspring cable allows the Air Bag module connecting cables to follow the rotation of the steering wheel without the risk of breaking.The two passenger Air Bag modules (two gas generators which inflate a large single bag) are located in the dashboard, fixed directly to the vehicle crossmember by a special bracket.The passenger Air Bag can be manually deactivated via a special switch - which can be operated by a key - located above the dashboard in the driver's glove compartment.When the key is turned to OFF, the control unit also controls the activation of a passenger air bag disablement warning light on the instrument panel. The Side Bag is housed in the outer part of the front seat and is activated in the case of a side impact detected by the sensor.The control unit comes with a self-diagnostic function.it detects and memorizes any faultsit recognizes the various components and the type of faultit signals the presence of faults via a warning light.
System activations following a particularly serious impact are memorized by the control unit. For further details see 2888293see DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION:5580C
air bag system . The supply line for the system control unit is protected by a special fuse next to the junction unit.767there are two possible configurations for the system. - the "basic" configuration with a driver's Air Bag, side bags and two pretensioners. - the full configuration which also includes a passenger Air Bag and disabling device.768 Functional description The control unit for the Air Bag system M60 is controlled by the ignition (INT) at pin 15 from the line protected by fuse B32 . Pin 34 is connected to the specific earth C50 , like pin 40, on "complete" versions, i.e. with a passenger Air Bag. (on versions with a driver's Air Bag only, pin 40 is not connected). When frontal impact of a certain severity (depending on the software setting) is detected, the control unit sends control signals to set off the modules:to driver's Air Bag Q9 , via the steering wheel clockspring Q10 (from pins 1 and 2): to the outer passenger Air Bag Q12 and the inner one Q13 (from pins 13 and 14 and 3 and 4, respectively);
Pins 5 and 8 are connected to the passenger Air Bag disabling switch H75 . When the system self-diagnostic function detects a fault or an impact is detected, control unit M60 sends a signal -from pin 33 - to the Air Bag fault warning light located in instrument panel E50 .767the "Air Bag fault" warning light is a so-called "intelligent" warning light: thanks to a special operating circuit inside the instrument, it comes on, not only to signal a fault in the Air Bag system, but also if there is no connection or a short circuit to earth in the circuit which connects the instrument with the control unit. When the passenger Air Bag is disabled, the control unit M60 sends a signal, from pin 30, to the "passenger Air Bag deactivation" warning light, located in the instrument panel E50 . This is an earth signal and makes the warning light come on because the instrument panel Side impact detection sensors K66 (driver's side) and K67 (passenger side) send signals to pins 22, 24 and 23, 25 respectively of control unit M60 .When side impact of a certain severity (dependent on the software setting) is detected, the control unit sends control signals to set off the modules:to driver's sidebag Q30 (from pins 16 and 17): to the passenger side Air Bag Q31 (from pins 18 and 19);
Self-diagnostic data can be read by connecting the unit to connector R10 . This receives signals from pin 9 of control unit M60 through the relevant tester line.
