DescriptionTo increase the protection against theft attempts, an electronicimmobiliser system known as the ALFA ROMEO CODE system is adopted. The keys are fitted with an electronic Transponder device, which sends a coded signal to a special CODEelectronic control unit. If it recognizes the code sent, it allowsthe engine to be started up.The code used in the communication, whichtakes place via aerial, changes each time the car is started up(rolling code). The code cannot therefore be reproduced, even withelectronic scanners. The main function of the Code control unitis to identify the code in the ignition key. The control unit containsa secret code which is used to communicate with the key Transponder. The control unit contains all enabled keycodes in its memory, together with the code used in the communicationbetween Code control unit and engine management unit. When the keyis turned to ON for for the first time, if the key is identifiedcorrectly, the code is transferred to the engine management unit andis then indelibly linked to the Code control unit. For more details 3232973see DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION:5580Eanti-theft device . The Code system has supply lines for thecontrol unit protected by the maxifuse which also protects the enginemanagement system and by the fuse which protects other suppliescontrolled by the ignition.
Functional description The CODE control unit M20 is supplied at pin 3 by thebattery from the line for the maxifuse EFI of B5 to 2/99or B99 from 2/99, through the line protected by fuse B35 to2/99 or by fuse F5 of supplementary fuse box B98A from2/99. The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54)reaches pin 8 from the line protected by shunt fuse B25 to2/99 or fuse F4 of the additional fuse box B98A from2/99. Pin 4 is earthed. The line leading from pin 6 is a serialline leading to engine management unit M10 , which is responsiblefor identifying the key and exchanging codes. The control unit is equipped with a self-diagnosticunit that may be used by connecting the unit to connector R10 :this receives signals from pin 5 of control unit M20 throughthe tester line. The self-test system also produces the signalfor the "CODE failure" warning light, located in the checkinstrument E30 , which comes out of pin 2 of the control unit M20 . The check module E30 receives a supplycontrolled by the ignition (INT) at pin 1 from the line protectedby fuse B11 to 2/99 or from fuse F4 of supplementary fusebox B98B from 2/99: when this earth signal arrives, the "CODEfailure" warning light comes on. A second control unit connector is connectedvia two leads to the aerial, fitted coaxially to the ignition key,in order to detect key insertion and rotation.

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
