G - TESTS W/CODES 1992 ENGINE PERFORMANCE Audi Self-Diagnostics

Audi 80 Quattro 1992 - INTRODUCTION

If no faults were found while performing BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES, proceed with self-diagnostics. If no fault codes or only pass codes are present after entering self-diagnostics, proceed to TESTS W/O CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.).

Audi 80 Quattro 1992 - SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM HARD FAILURES

Hard failures cause malfunction light to glow and remain on until problem is repaired. If light comes on and remains on (light may flash) during vehicle operation, cause of malfunction must be determined using diagnostic (code) charts. If a sensor fails, control unit will use a substitute value in its calculations to continue engine operation. In this condition (limp mode), vehicle runs but driveability is not optimum.

Audi 80 Quattro 1992 - INTERMITTENT FAILURES

Intermittent failures may cause malfunction light to flicker. Light goes out after intermittent fault goes away. Corresponding trouble code, however, will be retained in control unit memory. If fault does not reoccur within a certain time frame, related trouble code will be erased from control unit memory. Intermittent failures may be caused by sensor, connector or wiring related problems. See INTERMITTENTS in TESTS W/O CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.

Audi 80 Quattro 1992 - ENTERING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS CIS-E III

Drive vehicle at least 5 minutes to allow fault information to be stored. If a no-start condition exists, operate starter at least 6 seconds and then return ignition switch to ON position. DO NOT turn ignition off or fault memory will be erased.

Audi 80 Quattro 1992 - RETRIEVING CODES CIS-E III

  1. Locate 2 diagnostic connectors in driver footwell area. Connect a test light between connectors "A" and "B". See Fig. 1 .

NOTE: If ICU is replaced, check ignition timing. If warning light flashes while driving, knock regulation is at maximum control limit.

  2. Connect jumper wire to other terminal in connector "A". Touch other end of jumper wire to remaining terminal in connector "B" for at least 4 seconds. Fault codes will now be displayed by flashing CHECK ENGINE light (California vehicles) or flashing test light (Federal vehicles). These fault codes are from Ignition Control Unit (ICU).

NOTE: Pay careful attention to flashing light since no discernible break points exist between 4-digit fault codes.

  3. Trouble codes will be flashed as 4-digit numbers. A 1/2-second pause occurs between flashes. Add flashes together to obtain code for each of four digits. See Fig. 2 . Flashing ENGINE light is shown, using test light is similar. A 2 1/2-second pause will occur before code for next digit is flashed. After code for fourth (last) digit is flashed, another 2 1/2-second pause occurs.

  4. To advance to next fault code, touch end of jumper wire to remaining terminal in connector "B" again for at least 4 seconds. See Fig. 1 .
  5. Display fault codes until Code 0000 is displayed. Code 0000 is identified by light repeatedly coming on for 2 1/2 seconds and then going off for 2 1/2 seconds. This indicates all fault codes from ICU have been displayed.
  6. After Code 0000 is displayed, repeat step 4) to display fault codes from Fuel Injection Control Unit (FICU). Engine speed may increase. Record all codes.
  7. Repeat step 4) until all FICU fault codes have been displayed. When all fault codes from FICU have been displayed, a Code 0000 will be displayed. For a list of all fault codes and possible problems, refer to CIS-E III FAULT CODE IDENTIFICATIONS table.
  8. Check and repair circuits and/or sensors as indicated. See appropriate test in I - SYS/COMP TESTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. After fault is corrected, repeat step 4) and check for additional codes.

NOTE: ICU and FICU terminal identifications are located on respective connectors on vehicle.

Audi 80 Quattro 1992 CIS-E III FAULT CODE IDENTIFICATIONS

Code System Affected Probable Cause
1111 ICU Or FICU Defective Memory Circuits
1231 Speed Sensor Signal Not Being Received
2121 Idle Switch Switch Stuck Closed Or Wiring Problem
2122 Engine Speed Signal Or Hall Sender (1) No Engine Speed Signal
2123 Full Throttle Switch Switch Stuck Closed Or Wiring Problem
2132(2) No Data Transmitted From FICU To ICU Open wire
2141 Knock Regulation (3) Engine Or Ignition Knock
2142 Knock Sensor Defective Sensor Or Sensor Wiring
2223 Altitude Sensor No Signal From Sensor
2232 Airflow Sensor (4) No Signal From Sensor To FICU
2233 Air Sensor Reference Voltage (5) No Reference Voltage
2312 Coolant Temp Sensor No Signal From Sensor
2341 O2 Sensor Control O2 Sensor Control
2342 O2 Sensor No Signal From Sensor
2431 EGR System Valve Stuck Or Wiring Problem
4431 Idle Stabilization Valve Problem In Wiring To Valve
4444 No Faults Stored ---
0000 End Of Diagnosis ---
(1) From ICU Terminal No. 17

(2) If this code is set, verify control unit part numbers are as follows; Ignition ECU - 443-906-264-F ("E" indicates California). Fuel injection ECU-443-907-397-M.

(3) This will cause ignition timing to be retarded to maximum limit.

(4) Another cause could be an open circuit between FICU terminal No.21 and ICU terminal No. 8.

(5) Between ICU terminal No. 21 and FICU terminal No. 26.

Audi 80 Quattro 1992 - CLEARING CODES

NOTE: On Federal vehicles with CIS-E III, procedure for erasing trouble codes from memory is not available from manufacturer.

Audi 80 Quattro 1992 - CIS-E III (California)

  1. Use FICU and ICU part numbers to identify California and Federal vehicles. California vehicles have FICU (443-906-264-B) and ICU (443-907-397-E). Federal vehicles have FICU (443-906-264-C) and ICU (443-907-397-C).
  2. To erase trouble codes from memory, turn ignition off. Insert fuse in top of fuel pump relay. See Fig. 3 . Turn ignition on. Wait at least 4 seconds, and then remove fuse.
  3. A signal will repeatedly come on for 2 1/2 seconds and then go off for 2 1/2 seconds. Reinstall fuse in top of fuel pump relay. Wait at least 10 seconds, and then remove fuse. If procedure was followed correctly, warning light will stay on continuously.
