DescriptionAn automatic system manages the passengercompartment climate control, i.e. temperature and ventilation withrecirculation and air flow orientation, with separate managementof the temperature for the left and right hand sides of the passengercompartment (bi-zone system).A dedicated control unit managessystem operation by controlling:air temperature at the driver/passenger vent;air distribution to the vents;speed of the fan (varies continuously);activation of the compressor (air refrigeration circuit);activation of air recirculation; The MAX-DEF fast defrost function (i.e. a set of actionswhich allow both the windscreen and the rearscreen to be demistedquickly); The control unit sets the above parametersin order to adjust passenger compartment temperature to the requiredlevel. The system controls are located outside the control unithousing. The following parameters/functionscan be modified manually:fan speeddistribution directioncompressor disablementdefrosting/demisting:recirculationManual selections always take precedenceover automatic selections and are stored until the user deliberatelycancels the command, allowing the automatic device to take controlover the relevant function. The control unit downloads informationon interior and exterior temperature and climatic conditions viaspecial sensors.outdoor temperature sensor located on the driver sidedoor mirror.lower mixed air temperature sensor (right and left);upper mixed air sensors (right and left);passenger compartment temperature sensorsunlight sensor, which measures the sun's rays on thewindscreen;exhaust gas presence sensor (A.Q.S.: Air Quality Sensor):suppliesa signal when the air pollution index exceeds a preset level ofharmfulness. This signal turns on the recirculation to prevent pollutedair entering the passenger compartment;demisting sensor, which detects the presence of waterdroplets (mist) on the inner surface of the windscreen; this informationturns on the relevant demisting strategy., which alters the airand ventilation distribution pattern. After processing the information, it adjustspassenger compartment air intake speed by means of the fan motorand air temperature by means of two mixer actuators (one for theright side and one for the left). it also sets flow distributionwith another actuator and - lastly - interior air/exterior air recirculationvia a final actuator. When required, the ECU automatically activatesthe cooling circuit and dehumidifies the air by operating the airconditioner compressor 3234652SeeE6021COMPRESSOR ENGAGEMENT . For more details 3232958Characteristic of working principle5040AIR CONDITIONING CASINGAND COMPONENTS . The control unit supply lines are protectedby a fuse in the junction unit and by the fuse which protects othersupplies controlled by the ignition. The fan supply lines are protected by aspecial maxifuse. The system will only operate when the ignitionis turned ON.
Functional description The climate control unit M70 supply iscontrolled by the ignition (INT/A) - pin 8 of connector A - fromthe line protected by fuse F6 of the additional fuse box B98. issupplied directly at pin 4 of connector A from the line protectedby fuse F10 of the junction unit B1. Climate control unit M70 also receivesa supply controlled by the ignition (INT) at pin 7 of connectorA from the line protected by fuse F1 of the additional fuse boxB98B. The supply for illuminating the controlswith the side lights on reaches pin 5 of connector A from the linecoming from the switch for the steering column switch unit H5protected by fuse F4 of the additional fuse box B98B. Pin 3 of connector A of M70 is earthed. Control unit M70 is also connected tosensors K87 (right lower treated air - connector B - and left -connector A), K88 (right upper treated air - connector B - and left- connector A); these sensors receive a reference earth from pin14 of connector A and send signals to pins 19, 20, 25 and 26 ofM70. Passenger comparment air sensor K89 alsoreceives a reference earth from pin 1 of connector B and sends asignal to pin 1 of connector A of M70. Sensor K89 isfitted with a fan motor controlled by the ignition so that the temperaturereading is not affected by the motionless and thus warmer air insidethe dashboard. The solar ray sensor K90 informs thecontrol unit of the heat coming from rays: it receives a 5V supplyfrom pin 6 of connector A of control unit M70 and gives out twosignals: to pin 24 for the right area and to pin 33 for the leftarea. The exhaust gas presence sensor (A.Q.S.) K64supplies a recirculation control signal when the air pollution exceedspre-set levels: it is supplied at pin 1 from the line controlledby the ignition (INT/A) protected by fuse F15 of junction unit B1. ;pin 2 is earthed and pin 3 sends a signal to pin 16 of connectorA of Demisting sensor K03 is supplied at pin2 of ignition-operated line (INT) protected by fuse F4 of supplementaryfuse box B98B; Pin 1 is earthed and pin 3 sends a signal topin 15 of connector A of M70. The outdoor temperature sensor is locatedon the door mirror P60: the sensor is connected to pin 21 ofconnector A of M70. The air conditioning system is equippedwith one recirculation actuator ( N82), two air blending actuators(N78 and N79) and two air distribution actuators (N80). The recirculation actuator N82 is operatedby the control unit M70 from pins 18, 19, 20 and 21 of connectorB. Mixing actuators N78 and N79 are controlledfrom control unit M70 via pins 14, 15, 16, 17 and 10, 11, 12, 13of connector B, respectively. The air mixing actuator N80 is controlledfrom control unit M70 from pins 23, 24, 25 and 26 of connector B. An electronic governer M72 controls fanN85 at different speeds via an earth command: this is ignition-operated(INT/A) from a line protected by fuse F6 of supplementary fuse boxB98B. receives an control input signal from pin 22 and returnsa feedback signal to pin 9 of connector A of M70. Fan N85 is supplied directly from aline protected by maxifuse A/C of B99. Pin 18 of connector A of M70 receivesa speedometer signal from module E10. Similarly, pin 17 of connectorA of M70 receives an rpm signal from module E15. Pin 2 of connector A of M70 receivesan engine temperature signal from engine management unit M10, orsensor K35. Pin 11 of connector A of M70 controlsengagement of the compressor See E6021 COMPRESSOR ENGAGEMENT . It should be remembered that the climatecontrol control unit only 'houses' the control button and the LED,but does not in any way affect the heated rear windscreen activationstrategy 3233996SeeE3030HEATED REAR WINDSCREEN AND DOOR MIRROR DEFROSTING . The same applies to the infocenter controls 3234378SeeE4024INFOCENTER INSTRUMENT .

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
