Operational Description - ESP - Fiat ULYSSE 2.2 16V JTD fino a 04/03

The ESP function is managed by ABS control unit M050.Pins 2, 6 of connector A receive power from engine bay control unit B001 via a line protected by maxifuse MF02. Pin 23 connector A of control unit M050 is supplied by junction unit B001 via a line protected by fuse F03.The control unit M050 converses, from pins 24 and 40 of connector A, via the CAN, with the body computer node M001, at pins 2 and 4 connector M.Pins 19, 35 connector A of control unit M050 communicate via the CAN with engine control unit M010 at pins A3, A4 connector A.The same connection arrives, via the CAN, from pins 2 and 4 connector M M001, at the steering wheel node control unit M093, connector D which incorporates the steering sensor, i.e. providing steering wheel angular position readings.Control unit M050 controls the speed of each individual wheel via wheel sensors K070 (pins 12, 28 connector A), K071 (pins 16, 16 connector A), K075 (pins 13, 14 connector A) and K076 (pins 30, 31 connector A).The stability control system is engaged when, through the data supplied by the slewing sensor K074, control unit M050 detects a vehicle instability situation (understeer or oversteer).Sensor K074 is connected directly to control unit M050 at pins 8, 9, 10, 21, 39, 41 of connector A.Pin 32 connector A of control unit M050 receives a right and left front wheel brake pad wear earth signal from sensors K020 and K021.An earth signal is received at pin 22 connector A coming from the sensor K025 signalling the brake fluid level; these signals are then sent, via the CAN, to the instrument panel and to the milometer warning lights node M140.The lighting up of the ABS-ESPsystem warning lights (ABS failure, EBD function/minimum brake fluid level, ESP engagement) is managed by the milometer warning lights node M140, which communicates, via the CAN, with the instrument panel E050 and the body computer node M001.The instrument panel E050 and the milometer warning lights node M140 receive a supply via the CAN (pin 13 of E50 and pin 4 of M140) through the line protected by fuse F24 of the body computer M001.A speedometer signal is available from pin 33 of the ABS control unit M050; this wire is not connected on the dashboard side of the coupling D001 and can be used for connecting the meter for the TAXI version or for any device that requires this signal.The ESP system can be excluded using the special switch I115. The supply at pin 4 is provided by the body computer node M001 from pin 7 connector D, through the line protected by fuse F12; the exclusion signal reaches the instrument panel node E050 (pin 4) and from there the control unit M050, via the CAN.767there is a second "redundant" switch on the brake pedal used, in particular, by the engine management control unit and the ABS control unit.The "basic" switch (I030) is the "normally open" type (when the pedal is pressed, the switch closes), whilst the "redundant" switch (I035) is the "normally closed" type (when the pedal is pressed, the switch contact opens): the system checks the consistency of the "pedal pressed" information in this way.The brake pedal pressed signal comes from the brake pedal switch I030, connected to the body computer node M001 at pin 2 of connector B and is supplied directly by the ignition switch H001.Clutch pedal switch I031 and the safety switch on the brake pedal I035 supply a signal to indicate engagement has taken place to pins E3 and E4 of connector B of M010, respectively.The two switches receive a supply from the ignition-controlled line protected by fuse F18 of the body computer M001.The "redundant" switch I035 is the "normally closed" type (when the pedal is pressed, the switch contact opens): the system checks the consistency of the "pedal pressed" information in this way.The information is sent, from the control unit M010, via the CAN, to the control unit M050.Control unit M050 has an autodiagnostic function: the autodiagnostic data can be read by connecting to connector R010 - pin 12: it receives signals from pin 11 connector A of M050 via the special diagnostic line.

The vehicle is equipped with an electronically controlled safety system which, in the case of a frontal impact of a certain severity, activates the front seat belt pretensioners and the front Air Bags protecting the driver and the passenger.In the case of a fairly serious side impact, the side Air Bags (Side Bags) and the corresponding front Window Bags (only on the side where the impact took place) are activated.An electronic control unit manages the entire system controlling all the components and activating the retention systems (pretensioners and Air Bags), when necessary.The control unit is located under the centre console and is securely fastened to the bodyshell: in this way the deceleration sensors located inside the unit are near the centre of gravity and detect the deceleration for the entire vehicle accurately.An accelerometric sensor on the pillar of both front doors transmits a signal to the control unit in the case of a side impact.When, according to the control logic, the two sensors detect a slight frontal impact, the control unit sends signals for the intervention of the front modules in the first stage and both the front and rear pretensioners.If a more serious frontal impact is detected, the control unit sends signals for the intervention of the front modules in the second stage.In the case of a fairly serious side impact, the front and rear side Air Bags (Side Bags) and the corresponding Head Bag (only on the side where the impact took place) are activated.There are two stages for the front Air Bag modules: the first intervenes at an intial impact level, the second in the case of a more serious impact.The two stages are produced by means of two separate charges which "fill" the bag 60% (first stage) and 40% (second stage).The driver side air bag module is located in the middle of the steering wheel. It is fitted on a tilting plate that is also used to control the horns. The plate houses a metal container that contains the folded bag and the gas generation device that inflates the bag.A clock spring allows the connecting cables for the Air Bag module to follow the rotation of the steering wheel without danger of breaking.The passenger Air Bag module is located in the dashboard, above the glove compartment and is fastened directly to the vehicle crossmember through a special bracket.The passenger air bag may be deactivated manually by means of a special switch which can be operated using the key: it is located at the edge of the dashboard and is only accessible with the door open.With the key OFF the control unit also controls activation of a special "passenger air bag disabled" warning light.The Side Bags are housed in the outer part of the front seatsThe Head Bag consists of a bag that inflates positioning itself between the head of the passengers and the side windows. The folded Head Bag is located under the ceiling lining, whilst the rear pillar houses the gas generator.The pretensioners are incorporated in the reels of both the front and rear seat belts.The control unit is equipped with an autodiagnostic function:it detects and stores faults;it recognises the various components and the fault type;it indicates the onset of faults by means of warning lightsThe activation of the system following a particularly serious impact is memorized by the control unit.768when operations are carried out to the Air Bag system, the following safety recommendations must be closely followed.
