The F.A.P. system (Anti-Particle Filter) is fitted on vehicles equipped with Diesel engines in order to reduce the particles present in the exhaust gases by more than 95%.The particulate cannot be eliminated through the use of normal catalytic converters, for this reason special (particle) filters are used which, however, suffer from the following defect: their performance deteriorates rapidly especially if used for town driving.The F.A.P. system allows the automatic regeneration of the particle filter during the operation of the vehicle, keeping it working efficiently in all usage conditions for about 80,0000 [km] after which it should be replaced.The FAP system consists of:The F.A.P. system consists of:- a silicon carbide anti-particle filter in conjunction with a catalyzer (located upstream of the filter) and sensors for checking the temperature and pressure;- an additive system which injects an appropriate amount of cerium oxide based additive into the fuel tank each time it is refilled.The control logic incorporated in the engine management control unit operates the artificial regeneration of the filter.There is a diesel additive control unit that regulates the addition of additive into the fuel tank. The fuel level, engine speed and vehicle speed signals are used to carry out this operation.Depending on the signals received, the above mentioned control unit determines the amount of additive to be injected and activates the additive injection pump.The additive reservoir is located under the vehicle near the fuel tank: it has a capacity of 5 [l]: this quantity lasts for about 80,000 [km].The additive injection pump, submerged in the tank, has the task of providing the pressure (3 bar) and the flow rate (80 l/h) required for the correct operation of the additive circuit.The diesel additive level sensor has the task of notifying the control unit that the minimum level has been reached.The temperature sensor downstream of the catalyzer (located between the catalyzer and the particle filter) allows the engine management control unit to monitor the increase in the temperature of the exhaust gases due to catalytic combustion.The differential pressure sensor constantly measures the difference in pressure between the inlet and outlet of the catalytic converter/particle filter assembly. This measurement makes it possible to determine the filter blockage level.The intake air heating circuit is connected to the FAP system: it involves a device designed to increase the temperature of the exhaust gases raising the temperature of the intake air. This function is only activated during the filter regeneration stage.
Engine management control unit M010 controls and governs the entire electronic ignition and injection system and consequently the FAP system as well.The control unit M010 communicates via the CAN line (pins A3 and A4 connector A) with the body computernode M001 (pins 8 and 10 connector D).The diesel additive control unit M180 manages the addition of additive into the fuel.The control unit M180 is connected (pins 6 and 7), via the CAN line, to the Body computer node M001 (pins 35 and 37 connector E) which (pin 12 connector B) also provides the power supply (pin 1).The same control unit M180, is connected (pins 9 and 100 to the diesel additive pump N176 (pins 3 and 4 respectively) and (pins 16 and 15) to the diesel additive level sensor K186 (pins 1 and 2 respectively).The main injection relay, inside the engine compartment junction unit B001, controls the entire system: it is energized by a control signal coming from pin H2 of connector B of the control unit M010.Once energized, it provides a power supply (pin 24 connector B of B001) to the injection pump third piston deactivating solenoid valve L005 (pin 2) and intake air heating solenoid valve L097 (pin 1) through a line protected by fuse F10.During the artificial regeneration, the injection pump third piston deactivation solenoid valve L005 controls the high pressure pump third piston to ensure the correct fuel flow rate required for post-injection: pin 1 is connected to pin A4 of connector B of the engine management control unit M010.The following are also connected to the same control unit M010 (connector B):- the intake air heating solenoid valve L097 which is controlled at pin 2 from pin B3;- the temperature sensor downstream of the catalyzer K188 with pins 1 and 2 at pins F3 and E3 respectively;- the differential pressure sensor K187, with pins 1, 2 and 3 at pins D3, M3 and H2 respectively.
