DescriptionThe navigation system informs you of thevehicle's position on the map (in relation to both urban and non-urban/motorwayroad networks). In this way, the driver is taken to thedesired destination, guided step-by-step by voice messages and visualinformation. The system also provides additional information forreaching services of general interest, such as hotels, car parks, restaurants, pharmacies, service stations, hospitals, ALFA ROMEO garages, railwaystations, airports, etc.The navigator is incorporated in the radiounit: it is a BOSCH radio navigator personalized especially forALFA ROMEO.The navigation system uses the GPS(Global Positioning System) satellite location technology; it hasthe following functions:vehicle locationcalculation of the routeidentification of 'route guidance' manoeuvresmanagement of the map data base (on CD-ROM)The navigation CD-ROM reader is locatedin the radio unit itself.768

767the navigation system operatesonly with the CD-ROM inserted in the specific drive; however itis possible to listen to a music CD during navigation. In this case, the navigation function requires the map CD to be inserted duringexecution of the route calculation procedures.
The GPS system consists of an aerial whichallows the GPS satellite location of the vehicle: the aerial isconnected to the relevant receiver, located in the integrated unit, via a specific shielded cable. The antenna is mounted at the rear ofthe roof: it has two functions (GSM/GPS) as it also incorporatesthe GSM aerial where the CONNECT 3234394SeeE4091CONNECT systemis also fitted. The vehicle position is identified by theanalysis of the GPS data and the speedometer and reverse gear signalscoming from the car. This position is shown on the monochromaticdisplay in the centre of the radionavigator.768

767 When the vehicle is new or afterany operation on the navigation system, the test and calibrationprocedures must be carried out as indicated in 3232968Characteristic of working principle5570ACCESSORIES .
On the CONNECT version with a NAVIGATORit is not possible to have a direct connection between the radioand the GSM/GPS aerial. A special GSM BOX, located in the glovecompartment, is fitted to act as an electronic interface. For more details 3232968Characteristic of working principle5570ACCESSORIES .
Functional description The radionavigator P20 is supplieddirectly (pin 4 of connector A) by the battery via the line forfuse F10 of the junction unit B1 and the maxifuseJ/B1 of B99 . It receives a supply when the ignition isswitched on (INT) (pin 7 of connector A) via the line for fuse F1 ofthe junction unit B1 . With the side lights switched on, the supplyreaches pin 6 of connector A by means of the line coming from theswitch for the steering column switch unit H5 , protectedby the controls illumination fuse F1 of the additional fusebox B98 ; the radionavigator controls are therefore lit upwhen the lide lights are switched on. Pin 8 of connector A, on the other hand,is earthed ( C20 ). Pin 1 receives a speedometer signal frominstrument E10 . Pin 3 receives a reverse engaged signalfrom switch I203233866SeeE2022REVERSING LIGHTS . The GSM BOX interface electronic device P131 issupplied directly (pin 11); it receives a supply directly from thebattery via the line for fuse F10 of the junction unit B1 andthe maxifuse J/B1 of B99 ; it also receives a supply controlled bythe ignition (INT) (pin 10) via the line for fuse F1 of thejunction unit B1 . Pins 9 and 18 are connected to the microphone P26 by means of a suitably screened cable; pins 16, 7 and4 (outputs to the speakers) are connected to the radionavigator P20 ,connector D, whilst pins 8 and 17 are connected to the connector P20F (CAN communication network between GSM BOX and radio).
