DESCRIPTION - DIPPED HEADLAMPS - Alfa Romeo 159 2.4 JTD 20V Fino a 12/05

The vehicle is fitted with two GAS DISCHARGE headlamps.The electronics built into each of the two headlamps switch them on and off according to the times defined by the software and, in accordance with international regulations, the gas discharge bulbs too. The system comprises an igniter located in the base of the bulb and a ballast located in the bottom part of the lamp.The left lamp is the master control unit, whilst the right one performs a slave role.The master lamp acquires the command for the dipped headlamps, the vehicle speed and from the potentiometers located on the wheel axles. Depending on the inputs, it directly controls the switching on of the left front headlamp (dipped headlamps) and controls the right one in a similar way via the serial line.The dipped beams are activated by turning a wheel on the stalk switch to the next position after the side light setting.A relay in the underfacia control unit controls activation of the low beams via two lines protected by specific fuses.The low beam activation relay is controlled by the Body Computer relay energizing is activated by enablement signals with the TEG inserted (INT) and from the specific signal from the steering column switch unit.With the dipped headlamps on, the switching to main beams causes the shutter in gas discharge bulb to be raised with a switch to main beams.The dipped headlamps can be automatically activated by means of the dusk sensor, if the AUTO function is set on the steering column switch unit. The dusk sensor is an infrared device that works at different sensitivity settings: when the dusk sensor is activated a message is shown on the instrument panel display indicating the sensitivity setting (from 1 to 3): this setting can be adjusted using the "Mode +" and "Mode -" buttons.The "Follow me home" function allows the dipped headlamps and the side lights to remain on even after the engine has been switched off (TEG extracted) for a period of 30 seconds or multiples thereof. The "dipped headlamps" warning light in the instrument panel signals that the lights have remained on.It is turned on using the lever in the same way as for activating the flasher within 2 minutes of the TEG being extracted: each time the lever is operated the length of time the lights remain on is increased by 30 seconds, up to a maximum of 210 seconds. Inserting the TEG or keeping the flasher lever pulled for more than 2 seconds eliminates the function.

Two signals (earth) are sent from the steering wheel stalk unit H5 to the Body Computer M1 that manages both side lights and low beams in manual or AUTO mode (automatic dusk sensor activation).The "Light 1" signal is sent from pin 28 of connector G of Body Computer M1 from stalk unit H5, pin 7 of connector C.The "Light 2" signal is sent to pin 2 of connector I of the Body Computer M1 from the steering column switch unit H5, pin 8 of connector C. The dipped headlamps are switched on manually when the "Light 1" is absent and when the "Light 2" signal is also missing.The dipped headlamps are activated in AUTO mode when the Light 1 signal is present and the Light 2 signal is not present. If both signals are present, the lights are constantly off.The dipped headlamps are automatically activated by the dusk sensor housed in the mirror P65 (signal via the A-BUS line at pin 7 of connector D of M1); the dusk sensor in P65 receives a supply from the INT line protected by fuse F49 of junction unit B2.The Body Computer M1 controls the supply for the dipped headlamps sending an earth signal to relay T1 in the junction unit under the dashboard B2 from pin 8 of connector F of M1 which energizes relay T1: this supplies the dipped headlamps F10 (left) and F11 (right). Each circuit is protected by a fuse in the junction unit B2 : F13 for the left headlamp and F12 for the right.Both electronic systems inside the headlamps F10 (left) and F11 (right) are supplied - pin 9 - from the INT line of junction unit B2 protected by fuse F37.Pins 12 of the two control units are connected to one another by means of a special serial line, whilst the speedometer signal from the Body Computer M1 (pin 28 of connector B) reaches pin 10 of the junction unit located in headlamp F10.Pins 11 of the two headlamps are connected to the diagnostic K lineThe Body Computer M1 is connected via the CAN line to the instrument panel E50 to manage the "dipped headlamps on" warning light and, if there are problems detected in the circuit, the specific warning light.
