The F.A.P. system (Anti-Particle Filter) is fitted on vehicles equipped with Diesel engines in order to reduce the particles present in the exhaust gases by more than 95%.Particulate cannot be removed by the use of normal catalytic converters. For this reason, special filters are used (antiparticulate), but these have the following fault: their performance drops quickly, particularly when they are used over urban routes.The FAP system allows automatic regeneration of the antiparticulate filter during vehicle service. It keeps the filter efficient under all service conditions for approximately 80,000 km. After this, it must be replaced.The FAP system consists of:- a silicon carbide anti-particle filter in conjunction with a catalyzer (located upstream of the filter) and sensors for checking the temperature and pressure;- an additive system which injects an appropriate amount of cerium oxide based additive into the fuel tank each time it is refilled.A control logic incorporated in the engine management node, which controls artificial regeneration of the filter.A diesel additive control unit modulates the addition of additive to the fuel tank. It uses fuel level, engine speed and vehicle speed signals to carry out this operation.According to the signals received, the above control unit determines the amount of additive to be injected and activates the additive injection pump.The additive tank is located under the vehicle near the fuel reservoir: its capacity is 5 [l]: this amount allows the car to cover 80,000 [km] approx.The additive injection pump, submerged in the tank, has the task of providing the pressure (3 bar) and the flow rate (80 l/h) required for the correct operation of the additive circuit.The diesel additive level sensor informs the control unit that the minimum level has been reached.The temperature sensor downstream of the catalytic converter (located between the catalytic converter and particulate filter) allows the engine control unit to monitor the exhaust gas temperature increasedue to catalytic combustion.The differential pressure sensor constantly measures the difference in pressure between the inlet and outlet of the catalytic converter/anti-particle filter assembly. This measurement makes it possible to determine the filter blockage level.The intake air heating circuit is connected to the FAP system: this device increases the exhaust gas temperature by increasing intake air temperature. This function is activated only during the filter regeneration stage.

Engine management control unit M010 controls and governs the entire electronic ignition and injection system and consequently the FAP system as well.Control unit M010 communicates via the CAN line (pins A3 and A4 of connector A) with body computer node M001 (pins 8 and 10 connector D).Body computer M001 (pins 25 and 27 connector E) is also connected (via the CAN line) to engine compartment junction unit B001 (pins 11 and 12 connector F respectively).Diesel additive control unit M180 manages the addition of additive to the fuel.Control unit M180 is connected (pins 6 and 7) via the CAN line to body computer node M001 (pins 35 and 37 connector E), which (pin 12 connector B) also supplies it with power (pin 1).Control unit M180 is also connected (pins 9 and 10) to diesel additive fuel pump N176 (pins 3 and 4 respectively) and (pins 16 and 15) to diesel additive level sensor K186 (pins 1 and 2 respectively).The injector main relay inside engine compartment junction unit B001 controls the entire system: it is energized by a control signal coming from pin H2 of connector B of the control unit M010.Once excited, it supplies power (pin 24 connector B of B001) to injection pump piston third deactivation solenoid L005 (pin 2) and intake air heating solenoid L097 (pin 1) via a line protected by fuse F10.During artificial regeneration, injection pump piston third deactivation solenoid L005 controls the thirdhigh pressure pump piston to ensure the correct fuel flow required for post-injection. pin 1 is connected to pin A4 of connector B of engine control unit M010.The following are also connected to control unit M010 (connector B):- intake air heating solenoid L097, which is controlled at pin 2 by pin B3;- temperature sensor downstream of catalytic converter K188, with pins 1 and 2 on pins F3 and E3 respectively;- differential pressure sensor K187, with pins 1, 2 and 3 on pins D3, M3 and H2 respectively;- Body computer node M001, with pin 8 of connector B on pin C3;- heated water intake solenoid L006, with pin 2 on pin C2.Pin 1 of L006 is connected to pin 3 of connector B of body computer node M001.
