Jaguar XJ12 1996 – 1996 ENGINE PERFORMANCE Self Diagnostics

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - 1996 ENGINE PERFORMANCE Self-Diagnostics

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - INTRODUCTION

If no faults were found while performing BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES in the BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article, proceed with self-diagnostics. If no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) or only pass codes are present after entering self-diagnostics, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.).

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM HARD FAILURES

Hard failures cause Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate and remain on until problem is repaired. If light comes on and remains on (light may flash) during vehicle operation, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be retained in Powertrain Control Module (PCM), also known as the Engine Control Module (ECM). Cause of malfunction must be determined by retrieving and using DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES. If a sensor fails, control unit will use a substitute value in its calculations to continue engine operation. In this condition, commonly known as limp-in mode, the vehicle runs but driveability will not be optimum.

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - INTERMITTENT FAILURES

Intermittent failures may cause MIL to flicker or illuminate and go out after the intermittent fault goes away. The corresponding DTC will be retained in PCM memory. If related fault does not reoccur within 50 starter operations, related DTC will be erased from PCM memory. Intermittent failures may be caused by sensor, connector or wiring related problems. See INTERMITTENTS in the TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL)

All models are equipped with an MIL. MIL is not used to retrieve DTCs. As a bulb check, MIL illuminates for 2 seconds when ignition is on and engine is not running. MIL also illuminates when a system failure has been detected and a corresponding DTC has been set in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) memory. Not all trouble codes will activate MIL. If MIL is on and no DTCs are in memory, problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in the TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - RETRIEVING CODES

Turn ignition off. Connect Jaguar Portable Diagnostic Unit (PDU) scan tool or generic scan tool to 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC). See Fig. 1. Turn ignition on. If using PDU scan tool, follow PDU screen prompts. If using generic scan tool, follow scan tool manufacturer's operating instructions. Check for and note any DTCs. Also check for and note Freeze Frame Data. See appropriate DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table for probable cause.

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - FREEZE FRAME DATA

Freeze frame data indicates engine operating conditions when the first malfunction, misfire or fuel trim malfunction was detected.

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - CLEARING CODES/PCM RESET PROCEDURE

NOTE: Some models have an anti-theft code built into the radio circuit. Clearing codes cancels clock and radio settings; make note of settings before beginning reset procedure. After PCM reset, the radio will not function until code is entered.

To clear codes or to reset Powertrain Control Module (PCM), use PDU scan tool or generic scan tool following manufacturer's instructions. Codes can also be cleared by turning ignition off and disconnecting negative battery terminal for 30 seconds. Disconnect scan tool from DLC, or reconnect negative battery terminal.

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - PCM LOCATION

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is located in passenger side kick panel PCM cover.

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - SUMMARY

If no hard trouble codes (or only pass codes) are present, driveability symptoms exist or intermittent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) exist, proceed to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.) or intermittent diagnostic procedure.

Jaguar XJ12 1996 - CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION

For DLC and PCM connector terminal identification, See Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 . DO NOT backprobe PCM when testing. Place tester probe into contact with terminal, from terminal side of wiring harness connectors in engine compartment. DO NOT puncture wire insulation. For female connectors, just touch terminal lightly with tester probe. DO NOT insert probe into terminal.
