An electronic control system supervises and governs all engine parameters to optimise performance and fuel consumption by means of a real-time response to different service conditions.The system is managed by a single SIMTEC 75.9 control unit which controls both the ignition and the sequential, phased injection.Depending on the signals received from numerous sensors, the control unit controls the injectors connected to it managing the following systems:- fuel supply;- air supply;- accelerator pedal;- engine cooling;- control of combustion - Lambda sensors;- control of exhaust with catalytic converter.- fuel vapour recirculation.The motorised Drive By Wire throttle body is also controlled electronically by the control unit: throttle opening is calculated in accordance with specific software mapped inside the engine control unit. This system does away with the need for a mechanical link between accelerator pedal and throttle body.The intake air is then directed to a modular intake manifold controlled by the engine management control unit by means of an electropneumatic valve.The control unit controls the engine phasing by means of a pair of phase transformers, one on the inlet shaft and one on the exhaust shaft; this solution allows optimum phasing, managing the inlet and exhaust separately, if necessary. Two timing sensors allow the solution set to be continuously monitored.The engine ignition is managed by the engine management control unit and there is a single coil for each spark plug with a built-in power stage.The electronic management system described above ensures that this engine meets the very latest EOBD (European On Board Diagnogis) system emission control and monitoring requirements (EURO 4). This system allows continous diagnosis of emission-related car components and notifies the driver if any of the components should deteriorate by turning on a warning light in the instrument panel.For more details,The system is also controlled by dedicated relays in the engine compartment junction control unit. Lines supplying the control unit and various system components (sensors and actuators) are protected by dedicated fuses that are also located inside the engine compartment junction unit.

Engine management control unit M10 controls and governs the entire electronic ignition and injection system.The control unit M10 receives a direct supply from the battery at pin 32 of connector A via the line protected by fuse F18 of engine compartment junction unit B1.The ignition-operated power supply (15/54 from the steering lock control unit) is received from a line protected by fuse F16 of B1 at pin 64 of connector A.Main injection relay T9 of B1 controls the entire system: it is energized by a control signal (earth) coming from pin 62 of connector A of control unit M10 and, as a result, sends a power supply:- to the injectors N70 and to the ignition module A30 - pin 2 - via the line protected by fuse F22 of B1;- to the vapour recovery solenoid valve L10, to the Lambda sensors on the catalyzer K17 and K18, to the intake variable geometry solenoid valve L15, to the intake side N92 and exhaust side N93 phase transformer solenoid valve and to the air flow meter K41, via the line protected by fuse F11 of B1;- to pins 31 and 47 of connector A of the actual control unit M10, via the line protected by fuse F17 of B1;The fuel pump relay T10 of B1 is supplied by the line protected by fuse F21 of B1.This is energized by a command signal (positive) from pin 49 of connector A of M10 and supplies power to the fuel pump N40 , which is earthed via inertia switch I50, which cuts off the circuit in the case of impact and thus prevents dangerous flows of fuel.The engine management control unit M10 receives signals from the various sensors thereby keeping all the engine operating parameters under control.The engine coolant temperature sensor on thermostat K36 receives a reference earth and sends a temperature signal to engine control unit M10, to pins 25 and 60 of connector B respectively.767The coolant temperature sensor on the radiator hose K036A, on the other hand, manages the electrically controlled thermostat and there is a description of it under the engine cooling function.The detonation sensor K50 provides information, by means of frequency signals, concerning the onset of detonation in the combustion chamber: it receives a reference earth from pin 27 of connector B of M10 and sends the respective signal to pin 10 of control unit connector B. An earth signal is sent, from pin 44 of connector B of M10, to the screening for the cables connecting the detonation sensor K50 with the engine management control unit.The engine prm sensor K46, located at the rear of the crankshaft, receives a positive signal and a reference earth respectively from pins 42 and 39 of connector B of the engine management control unit M10 and provides information concerning the engine speed by means of a signal sent to pin 35 of connector B of the control unit.Control unit M10 receives the mininum engine oil pressure sensor K30 signal at pin 5 of connector B.The air flow meter K41 sends pin 59 of connector B a signal proportional to the air flow rate. K41 also contains an air temperature sensor: the reference earth is provided by pin 28 of connector B of M10, while pin 12 of connector B receives the air temperature signal.The Lambda sensor upstream of the catalyzer (K17) and the one downstream (K18) provide the control unit M10 with information concerning the correct composition of the air/fuel mixture.The Lambda sensor K17 sends a signal to pin 53 of connector B of M10, while pin 23 provides a reference earth: An earth signal is sent, from pin 6 of connector B of M10, to the screening for the cables connecting the sensor inside the Lambda sensor K17 with the engine management control unit. The sensor is heated by a coil to ensure correct operation even when cold, via an earth signal from pin 58 of connector B of M10.The Lambda sensor K18 sends a signal to pin 54 of connector B of M10, while pin 29 provides a reference earth: An earth signal is sent, from pin 11 of connector B of M10, to the screening for the cables connecting the sensor inside the Lambda sensor K18 with the engine management control unit. The sensor is heated by a coil to ensure correct operation even when cold, via an earth signal from pin 19 of connector B of M10.The fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10 allows fuel vapours to flow through toward the engine intake, where they join the mixture that is entering the combustion chamber. The valve L10 is opened by the control unit when the motor is loaded via an earth signal from pin 46 of connector B of M10.The variable geometry control solenoid L15 is controlled by means of an earth signal from pin 3 of connector B of the engine control unit.The intake side timing sensor K106 receives a power supply form pin 42 of connector B of control unit M010 and a reference earth from pin 24 of connector B and sends a frequency signal corresponding to the timing to pin 22 of connector B of the actual control unit.The exhaust side timing sensor K107 receives a power supply form pin 42 of connector B of control unit M10 and a reference earth from pin 26 of connector B and sends a frequency signal corresponding to the timing to pin 21 of connector B of the actual control unit.The inlet side phase transformer N92 mechanically controls the timing advance at the intake: it is controlled by pin 56 of connector B of the control unit M10.The exhaust side phase transformer N93 mechanically controls the timing advance at the exhaust: it is controlled by pin 55 of connector B of the control unit M10.The accelerator pedal K55 has two built in potentiometers: a main one and one safety one. The first receives a power supply and earth respectively from pins 24 and 26 of connector A and sends the corresponding signal to pin 54 of the same connector of M10. The second receives a power supply and earth respectively from pins 25 and 27 of connector A of M10 and sends the signal to pin 53 of the same connector.Depending on the signal coming from the accelerator pedal K55, the control unit M10 controls the opening of the throttle by means of a motor integrated in the throttle casing N75. Pins 31-32 (positive) of connector B of M10 control the closure of the motorised throttle, while pins 47-48 (negative) of the same connector control the opening.The throttle body actuator N75 is equipped with two integral potentiometers: a main one and one safety one. The first receives a power supply and earth respectively from pins 41 and 40 of connector B and sends the corresponding signal to pin 9 of the same connector of M10. The latter also receives power and earth signals from pins 41 and 40 of connector B of M10 and sends a corresponding signal to pin 8 of the same connector.The engine management control unit M10 controls the opening of the individual injectors N70, via appropriate (duty-cycle type) signals sent from pins 64 (cyl.1), 61 (cyl.2), 62 (cyl.3), 63 (cyl.4) of connector B.The injectors N70 receive a power supply to enable the energizing of the main relay T9 of B1.The ignition module A30 contains 4 coils (one per cylinder). The engine management control unit M10 controls the main windings by means of the signals sent from pins 1-2 (cyl.1), 17-18 (cyl.2), 33-34 (cyl.3), 49-50 (cyl.4) of connector B, whilst the secondary windings send the impulse to the spark plugs. Pin 1 of A30 is connected to the earth on the engine C40.Pin 57 of connector A of control unit M10 receives an NA signal from the switch on brake pedal I30, supplied by an ignition-controlled supply (INT) via a line protected by fuse F37 of junction unit B2.Pin 45 of connector A of control unit M10 receives an NC signal from the switch on brake pedal I30, supplied by an ignition-controlled supply (INT) via a line protected by fuse F35 of junction unit B2.Pin 16 of connector A of M10 receives and earth signal coming from the switch on the clutch pedal I31.The control unit M10 then connects via the CAN - pins 6, 38 and 37, 21 - to the Body Computer M1 - pins 36 and 37 of connector B - and to the other network nodes. Via this connection, it sends information on:- engine coolant temperature, sent to the instrument panel E50 which manages the gauge and warning light;- engine speed, sent to the instrument panel E50 rev counter;- minimum engine oil pressure, which is sent to the instrument panel E50 which manages the warning light.Control unit M10 receives a speedometer signal generated by the ABS control unit M050 via the CAN.The control unit M10 autodiagnostic system produces a signal, from pin 1 of connector A, which is connected directly to the EOBD warning light located in the instrument panel E50.The control unit autodiagnostic data can be read by connecting to connector C of M1, pin 7: it receives signals from pin 5 of connector A of control unit M10 via the special diagnostic K line.
