DescriptionThe electronic anti-lock brake system (BOSCH5.7 ABS with ASR) governs braking pressure sent to the wheels andprevents loss of grip under all tyre and road surface conditions. This is combined with a VDC (VEHICLE DYNAMICCONTROL) system, which controls vehicle stability by modulatingdrive torque and braking the wheels differentially, if there isa loss of grip, thus helping to return the car to its correct trajectory. The VDC system acts on the engine and brakesto generate a stabilising torque when the ABS sensors detect conditionsthat could lead to the vehicle slipping. The VDC system includes the followingspecific components over and above those of the ABS:a sensor which detects the steering wheel position (steeringsensor);a sensor which detects the vehicle's rotation around thevertical axis and side acceleration (centrifugal force) (yaw sensor);a sensor that detects pressure on the hydraulic ABS unit(pressure sensor)By processing information from the sensors, the control unit is able to find out car position moment by momentand compare the position with the driver's ideal trajectory. Ifthe values do not tally, within a fraction of a second the controlunit chooses and implements more effective actions to restore the vehicleto its trajectory immediately: it applies a braking force of differentintensity to one or more wheels and reduces power transmitted bythe engine if necessary. The VDC comes on automatically when thevehicle is started up and cannot be switched off.A warning light on the control panel flasheswhen the system cuts in to notify the driver that the VDC systemhas come on.When the control unit detects an error inthe VDC function, the warning light is made to stay on in fixedmode.767the same warning light is alsoused for the ASR function; The VDC systems is connected to the ASRsystem .The supply lines to the control unit andthe various system components (sensors and actuators) are protectedby a specific maxifuse and by a fuse in the additional fuse box.
Functional description ABS electronic control unit M50 issupplied (at pins 12 and 6) directly by the battery via a line protectedby the ABS maxifuse, located directly on the battery A1 -connector C. The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54)reaches pin 23 from the line protected by fuse F6 of theadditional fuse box B98 A . The control unit is earthed via pins 1 and5. The four sensors K70, K71, K75, K76 sendwheel speed signals to pins 12-28, 16-15, 14-13 and 30-31 of M50 respectively. Brake pedal switch I30 sends a 'pedaldepressed' enablement signal to pin 32 of control unit M50 :the ABS cannot intervene unless the brake pedal is pressed. The control unit M50 receives a 'pedalreleased' signal, double switch, at pin 20. The 'ASR OFF' control button on panel H35 sendsa deactivation signal to pin 28 of M50 , while pin 27 relaysa signal that turns on an LED on panel H35 when the systemis off. Steering sensor K58 is supplied byABS control unit M50 at pin 39 and receives a reference earthfrom pin 21: the signal that detects sudden changes in steeringdirection is sent via the CAN line to engine control unit M10 and ABScontrol unit M50 (pins 24 and 40). The CAN line that connects M50 (frompins 24 and 40) to M10 allows the ASR function to notifythe engine management control unit of excessive engine power. thisline is not direct, but passes through the steering sensor K583234515SeeE5030PETROL ENGINE ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT , 3234559SeeE5050DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT . Yaw sensor K74 is supplied fromABS control unit M50 at pin 39, while it receives a referenceearth from pin 21: control and command signals are exchanged withABS control unit M50 , at pins 8, 9, 10 and 41. Pressure sensor K72 is supplied fromABS control unit M50 at pin 42, while it receives a referenceearth from pin 25: the pressure detection signal is sent to pin26 of ABS control unit M50 . If the control unit M50 detects problemsrelating to the ABS function, it sends the speedometer instrument E10 asignal from pin 22, which lights up the 'ABS failure' warning light;the lighting up of the 'VDC' warning light is also managed via thesame line; If the problems concern the EBD function, the handbrakewarning light is lit up from pin 38 of M50 .; these are earthsignals, and they cause the warning lights to come on, becuase theinstrument E10 supply is controlled by the ignition (INT)from the line protected by fuse F4 of the additional fuse box B99B . Pin 37 of M50 produces a speedometersignal (average speed of all four wheels) which is sent to the instrument panel E103234310SeeE4021SPEEDOMETER . The autodiagnostic data can be read by connectingto connector R10 : it receives signals from pin 11 of thecontrol unit M50 via the special diagnostic line.

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
