DescriptionThe car is equipped with two dipped beam headlamps. The dipped beam headlamps are switched onthrough the steering column switch unit by turning the special ringnut in the position after the side lights.A special relay - on the right hand side, under the dashboard - keeps the dipped headlamps on with the mainbeam headlamps on.The circuit is protected by two fuses, onefor the right hand headlamp, one for the left hand headlamp. The dipped beam circuit also enables theheadlamp alignment device and rear fog lamps for operation.
Functional description The circuit for the dipped beam headlamps is operated by thesteering column switch unit H5 . By placing the switch in the dipped beamposition, the line which supplies the headlamps F10 (left)and F11 (right) is supplied controlled by the ignition. Eachcircuit is protected by a fuse for the junction unit B1 : F5 forthe left headlamp and F4 for the right one. With the dipped beam headlamps on, thissupply passes through the dipped beam headlamps maintenance relay/remotecontrol switch J45 . If the lights are switched from dipped tomain beam, the suply is interrupted, but it is replaced by the onefrom pin 87 of switch J45 : the signal for switching on themain beam headlamps, in effect, energizes the relay (pin 86) which switchesthe supply to the direct line (maxifuse J/B2 of B5 to2/99 or B99 from 2/99) which thereby also keeps the circuitfor the dipped headlamps and the main beam headlamps on. The supply line for the left lamp also actsas a go ahead signal for the headlamp alignment ( 3234184SeeE3080HEADLAMP AGLINMENT CORRECTOR )and the rear fog lamps (check device inside the rev counter module E15)(3233898SeeE2031REAR FOG LAMPS ).

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
