DescriptionThe engine radiator and air conditionercondenser cooling system consists of two fans connected in parallel. They are operated together at twodifferent speeds in accordance with the same logic.the first speed is activated at a first coolant temperaturelevel or at a certain air conditioner coolant pressure. The second speed cuts in at a higher temperature or pressurethreshold. The fans are activated by means of specialrelays located in the engine compartment near the radiator crossmember. The supply lines for the fans are protectedby special maxifuses, whilst the energizing circuit for the relaysis protected by the fuse which protects numerous other services. The fans therefore only come on when theignition is switched ON.
Functional description The supply for the two fans N11 and N12 arrivesdirectly from the battery from the lines of the two maxifuses FAN1and FAN2 of B99 : the fans operate when they receive an earthcommand. The relays J30 , J31 and J32 ,specific to the cooling system, receive supply to their coils fromthe direct line (EFI) protected by fuse F5 of the additionalfuse box B98A . They are energized by an earth signal comingfrom the engine control unit M10 . If the coolant temperature reaches the firsttemperature stage, or the 4-stage pressure switch K10 (pin 3)indicates to control unit M10 - pin 42 of connector A - that thefirst pressure stage has been reached, control unit M10 sends anearth signal to 1st speed relay J30 from pin 90 of connector A,which energizes the coil. The relay then sends an earth which, via the additional resistors O10 and O12 , operatesboth fans N11 and N12 which rotate at the first (slow)speed. If the engine coolant reaches a higher temperaturelevel, or the 4 stage pressure switch K10 (pin 6) signals tothe control unit M10 - pin 81 of connector A - that a higher pressurelevel has been reached, then the control unit M10 sends an earthsignal, pin 69 of connector A, to the two 2nd speed fan relaysJ31 and J32 which energize the coils. The two relays then sendan earth directly to the two fans N11 and N12 whichrotate at maximum speed.

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
