DescriptionThe rear window heater element, door mirrordemister coils and the windscreen heater element absorb a considerableamount of energy. They must therefore be turned off once they havebeen working for a certain period of time. The demisting of the heated rear windscreenand the rear view mirrors takes place with a timer, according tothe following logic. The system is turned on with:the ignition in the ON positionengagement signal coming from the special button, in theair conditioning/heater control panel (or from the "rapid demisting"function of the actual air conditioner). The coils remain supplied for 20 minutes, then the power supply is cut off.The power supply is also cut offunder the following conditions:ignition key in the OFF position;disengagement signal from the button (or from the "rapiddemisting" function);after the initial 10 minutes of operation, if the batteryvoltage goes below 11.6 V (if the voltage goes back up above 13V, then the supply is restored). The button control always takes priority over the max.defrosting function. For example, if the rear window is activatedautomatically by the max. defrost function and the button is pressed, the rear window is deactivated. The LED in the button stays on whilst the heated rearwindscreen is activated. This control logic is managed by the integratedservices control unit on the right hand side, under the dashboard.(the climate control/heater control unit only "houses"the control button and the LED, but does not affect the activation logicin any way). The defrosting circuit is protected by aspecial fuse and controlled by a specific relay located in the junctionbox.
Functional description The heated rear windscreen relay R3 ,located in the junction unit B1 , controls the simultaneousactivation of the demisting of both the rear windscreen P55 andthe external rear view mirrors P60 and P61 . The relay R3 is supplied by the directline from the battery through the fuse F11 - always for B1 -and the maxifuse J/B1 for B99 The coil for relay R3 energizedwhen the ignition is switched on (INT/A) by the line for fuse F6 of the additional fuse box B98 . An earth signal coming from the integratedservices control unit M40 (pin 9 of connector B) energizesthe coil of the relay R1 , with the supply consequently sentto resistors P55 , P60 and P61 . (the controlcircuit of the heated rear window P55 passes through theaerial P22 control unit. ( 3234201SeeE3510RADIO ) The supply circuit of the heated rear window P55 passes through a special interference filter in versionswith predisposition for a radio. The control unit M40 is suppliedwhen the ignition (INT) is switched on from the line for fuse F1 ofthe junction unit B1 (pin 7 of connector B). When an earth command is received (pin 14of connector B) coming from the climate control unit M70 (heatedrear windscreen on button pressed), according to the control logicdescribed previously, a command is sent which energizes the coilo f relay R3 (pin 9 of connector B). At the same time as the activation of theresistors, a signal is sent (from pin 11, of connector B of M40 )to light up the LED in the control button which is located in theclimate control unit M70 . - Version with Heater. When an earth commandis received (pin 14 of connector B) coming from the heater H80 (heatedrear windscreen on button pressed), according to the control logicdescribed previously, a command is sent which energizes the coilof the relay R3 (pin 9 of connector B). At the same timeas the activation of the resistors, a signal is sent (from pin 11,of connector B of M40 ) to light up the LED in the controlbutton which is located in H80 .

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
