DescriptionAn electronic management system supervisesand governs all engine parameters. It optimises performance andfuel consumption by responding in real time to different serviceconditions. The system is managed by a single controlunit that controls the twin spark ignition (static and lost spark),and the injection (phased). The system uses signals receivedfrom numerous sensors to control actuators. It is connected to thefollowing systems:fuel supply;air supply:engine cooling system;exhaust with catalytic converter;fuel vapour recirculation. The control unit also controls the hydraulicvariable valve timing - an exclusive system adopted on T. SPARKengines. The system is also controlled by means ofspecial relays located in the engine compartment near the battery. The supply lines to the control unit andthe various system components (sensors and actuators) are protectedby a specific maxifuse and other jumper fuses located next to thejunction unit.
Functional description The engine control unit M10 monitorsand controls the entire electronic ignition and injection system. The direct supply for the system arrivesfrom the battery from the line for the maxifuse EFI of B5 upto 2/99 or from B99 from 2/99. The control unit M10 is supplieddirectly by the battery at pin 18 of connector A, via the line protectedby fuse B35 up to 2/99 or from fuse F5 of the additionalfuse box B98A from 2/99. The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54)reaches pin 8 of connector A, via the line protected by fuse B25 upto 2/99 or fuse F4 of the additional fuse box B98A from2/99. Main injection relay J10 controlsthe entire system: this is excited by a control signal (earth) receivedfrom pin 9 of connector A of control unit M10 and then sends power:to pins 7 and 17 of connector A of the control unit, viathe line protected by fuse B41 up to 2/99 or fuse F3 ofthe additional fuse box B98A from 2/99.;to the injectors N70 , to the air flow meter K41 ,to the fuel vapour recovery solenoid valve L10 , to the variablevalve timing system actuator N76 and to the Lambda sensor K40 ;(all these lines are protected by fuse B40 up to 2/99 orfuse F2 of the additional fuse box B98A from 2/99). The fuel pump relay J15 receivesa supply controlled by the ignition via fuse B25 up to 2/99or fuse F4 of the additional fuse box B98A from 2/99. It is energized by a control signal (earth)from pin 30 of connector A of control unit M10 and suppliespower to fuel pump N40 , which is earthed through the inertiaswitch I50 , which cuts off the circuit in the case of a crashand so prevents the dangerous spilling of fuel. It also supplies power to the ignition coilsA30. The engine control unit M10 receivessignals from the various sensors in order to monitor all engineoperating parameters. Rpm sensor K46 provides informationon engine speed via a frequency signal sent to pins 22 and 32 ofconnector B of control unit M10 . These two signals are verylow intensity and are therefore shielded. Timing sensor K47 is supplied frompin 29 of connector B of control unit M10 and sends a signalof corresponding frequency to pin 23 of control unit connector B. Engine temperature sender unit K36 receivesa reference earth from pin 1 of connector B of control unit M10 andsupplies a signal proportional to the coolant temperature to pin5 of control unit connector B. The same sender unit also suppliesinformation to the temperature gauge and warning light ( 3234358SeeE4023DASHBOARD CENTRE AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT() ). Hot Lambda probe K40 provides controlunit M10 with information on the correct composition of theair-fuel mixture. The signal is sent to pin 30 of connector B of M10 ,while pin 21 provides a reference earth signal. Probe K40 isheated by a resistor in order to ensure it works efficiently evenwhen cold. The resistor is supplied by the relay J10 andreceives an earth signal from pin 8 of connector B of control unit M10 . Knock sensor K50 provides informationon knock status via a frequency signal sent to pin 2 of connectorB of control unit M10 . It receives a reference earth frompin 11 of connector B. The signals are very low intensity and aretherefore shielded. Air flow meter K41 (supplied fromrelay J10 ) receives a reference voltage from pin 1 of connectorA and sends pin 20 of connector A a signal proportional to air flow. K41 also contains an air temperature sensor: the sensor referenceearth is supplied by pin 29 of connector A of M10 , whilean air temperature signal is received by pin 30 of connector A. Control unit M10 controls the openingof individual injectors N70 via duty cycle signals produced by pins6 (cyl. 1), 17 (cyl. 2), 16 (cyl. 3) and 7 (cyl. 4) of connectorB of M10 . Injectors N70 receive a power supplyto enable opening from main relay J10 . Control unit M10 also controls coils A30 viacontrol signals (earth) for the coil primary windings, while thesecondary winding sends a pulse to the spark plugs: from pins 38and 10 of connector B for cylinder pair 1 -4 and from pins 9 and37 of connector B of M10 for cylinders 2-3. The primary windings for coils A30 receivethe supply for enabling the opening from the main relay J10 . The idle actuator N74 regulates theidle air flow via the butterfly. It receives a supply and referenceearth from pins 1 and 29 of connector B of control unit M10 :pins 4 and 13 of connector B are connected to the potentiometerwhich detects the position of the butterfly; pins 26 and 35 ofconnector B control the butterfly actuator. Fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10 allowsfuel vapours to pass through to the engine intake where they jointhe mixture entering the combustion chamber. The valve L10 ,supplied by the main relay J10 , is opened by the controlunit when the engine is under load via a duty-cycle signal frompin 34 of connector B of M10 . The variable valve timing system N76 mechanicallycontrols the inlet timing advance: it is controlled by pin 24 ofconnector B of the control unit. Control unit M10 is connected tothe ALFA ROMEO CODE control unit via a line from pin 16 of connectorA ( 3234721SeeE7010CODE ). The control unit is equipped with a self-testsystem that may be used by connecting the unit to connector R10 :this receives signals from pin 11 of connector A of control unit M10 throughthe tester line. The self-test system also produces the signal forthe "injection failure" warning light in the instrument E15 ,which comes from pin 12 of connector A of the control unit M10 . The module E15 receives a supplycontrolled by the ignition (INT) at pin 15 of connector A from theline protected by fuse B11 up to 2/99 or from fuse F4 of theadditional fuse box B98B from 2/99; when this earth signalarrives, the "fuel injection fault" warning light comeson. The speedometer signal (vehicle speed) reachespin 27 of connector A of control unit M10 ( 3234310SeeE4021SPEEDOMETER ). The control unit M10 sends from pin2 of connector A a signal proportional to the engine rpm ( 3234270SeeE4020REV COUNTER INSTRUMENT ). Control unit M10 is connected tothe air conditioning system via pins 19 and 31 of connector A. Thisallows engine idling speed to be adjusted to increased engine loadwhenever the compressor is activated, or to turn off the compressor inthe case of high speeds or high engine loads ( 3234652SeeE6021COMPRESSOR ENGAGEMENT ). The control unit also controls the enginecooling system: pins 4, 13, 34 and 35 of connector A control activationof the relevant fan ( 3234439SeeE5020ENGINE COOLING ).

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
