DescriptionThe brake lights are located at the rear in the side lights andin the central third brake light and consist of 10 separate bulbs. These are operated whenever the brake pedalis pressed, by means of a switch on the pedal itself. The correct operation of the side brakelights is controlled by the check device for the exterior lights, located inside the rev counter module. The following faults may occur:blown bulbbulb s.c. to earth or positiveincorrect bulb (5W bulb instead of 21W)A special failure warning light, also inthe rev counter module, comes on for all other faults in the variouscircuits. This warning light comes on for about 4 seconds when theignition key is turned to MAR, to indicate it is working properly, then it goes off.The third centre brake light is not controlledby the check panel. The circuit is protected by the two fusesfor the lights controlled by the check panel, one for the lightson the right hand side, the other for those on the left hand sideand by a fuse on the supply line for all three brake lights.A braking signal is also sent from the switchto the ABS, which detects braking status and therefore introducesbraking control. The same signal is also sent to some engine managementsystems, which take the braking condition into account when determiningthe engine control mode.On versions equipped with radios, a switchis fitted on the brake pedal with a special filter to prevent interferencewhen the pedal is pressed.
Functional description The switch I30 is controlled by the ignition (INT)fromthe line for fuse F1 for the control unit B1 : whenthe brake pedal is pressed, the switch closes and sends the operatingsignal to the check device inside the rev counter E15 (pin 5of connector A). The supply for the check device inside E15 arrivesdirectly from the battery (maxifuse J/B2 of B5 upto 2/99 or of B99 from 2/99) to pins 10 and 16 of connectorA, through fuses F2 and F3 of the junction unit B1 ; the former protects the circuits for the lights on the left-handside, the latter those on the right. The check device thereby controls the supply(pin 18 and pin 13 of connector A) for the side brake lights inthe rear light clusters F30 and F31 . In the case of failures in the circuit, the "lights failure" warning light - inside E15 -comes on, with the supply controlled by the ignition (IINT), pin15 of connector A, of the line protected by fuse B11 up to2/99 or by fuse F4 of the additional fuse box B98B from2/99. The switch I30 sends the signal foroperating the centre rear light cluster F40 via the junctionunit B1 (pin 18, connector D and pin 14 of connector E). The braking signal for the switch I30 issent from the switch to the ABS ( 3234769SeeE7020ABS )and - on some versions - to the engine management control unit aswell ( 3234515SeeE5030PETROL ENGINE ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT or 3234559SeeE5050DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT ).

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
