DescriptionThe rearscreen wiper is operated by turning the ring nut on the end of the lever located on the right of the steering wheel. The operation of the rearscreen wiper motor is controlled intermittently by the electronic device inside the steering column switch unit which also manages the windscreen wash/wipe: the activation of the rearscreen wiper is synchronized with the windscreen wiper, but the frequency is half that of the windscreen wiperBy pushing the lever gently towards the steering wheel the rearscreen washer function is activated; the same (two-way) pump is used as for the windscreen washer, but it rotates in the opposite direction and sends the detergent fluid to the rear, following the same control logic: the rearscreen wiper is activated the, as the rearscreen washer command is over, an additional stroke is carried out. When the windscreen wiper is working, engaging reverse gear automatically activates the rearscreen wiper: this function is managed by the Body Computer which forwards this information, coming from the reversing lights function control logic, to the electronic device in the steering column switch unit 3023223SeeE2022REVERSING LIGHTS . The rearscreen wash/wipe can only be operated with the ignition switched ON.The rearscreen wash/wipe circuit is protected by a specific fuse (which also protects the windscreen wash/wipe circuit) and operated by the ignition-operated relay, located in the junction unit. The windscreen wash/wipe circuit is protected by a specific fuse and is operated by the ignition-operated relay located in the underdashboard control unit. The windscreen wiper and washer can be operated with the ignition key turned to MAR.(INT/A).
Functional description The electronic device inside the steering column switch unit H5 and the controls on the right lever are supplied at pin 11 of connector A by the line 'controlled by the ignition' (INT/A) of the relay T12 protected by the fuse F43, both housed in the underdashboard control unit B2 . The electronic section of the steering column switch unit H5 which manages the rearscreen wiper function is supplied at pin 2 of connector C from the same line 'controlled by the ignition' (INT/A) for the relay T12 protected by the fuse F52, housed in the underdashboard control unit B2 . When the rearscreen wiper function is switched on, the steering column switch unit H5 sends the control signal to the rearscreen wiper motor N16 from pin 3 of connector C; pin 4, on the other hand, receives the earth signal coming from the motor end of travel cam which stops the operation. The motor N16 is then earthed. The windscreen/rearscreen washer switch, when operated, sends two signals from pins 10 and 12 of connector A which operate the windscreen/rearscreen washer pump N22 directly. Pin 3 of connector A receives the automatic rearscreen wiper activation signal coming from the Body Computer M1 , pin 1 of connector A 3023223SeeE2022REVERSING LIGHTS .

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour: a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery; a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For further details, see DESCRIPTION ANDOPERATION - 5580.768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360'). Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows:If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery (see op.). 5530B10).If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery (see op. 5530B14).If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
