DescriptionThe brake lights are located at the rear in the side lights and in the central third brake light and consist of 10 separate bulbs. These are operated whenever the brake pedal is pressed, by means of a switch on the pedal itself.Operation of both side brake lights is monitored by the exterior lighting check device. The following faults may occur:blown bulbbulb s.c. to earth or positiveincorrect bulb (5W bulb instead of 21W)A special light failure warning light comes on on the dashboard for all anomalies in the various circuits. This warning light comes on for about 6 seconds when the ignition key is turned to MAR, to indicate it is working properly, then it goes off.The circuit is protected by the two fuses protecting lights monitored by the check function.A braking signal is also sent from the switch to the ABS, which detects braking status and therefore introduces braking control. The same signal is also sent to some engine management systems, which take the braking condition into account when determining the engine control mode.
Functional description The main beams are controlled by electronic Check device M45 , which receives control signals from the switches and controls the bulbs while also checking the various lines. The supply for the Check device M45 arrives directly from the battery (maxifuse CENTR of B5 ) at pins 1 and 6 of connector C, via fuse F11 of junction unit B1 . The supply controlled by the ignition (INT/A) arrives via fuse F1 of junction unit B1 at pin 9 of connector C: pin 7 of connector C is earhed. The switch I30 is supplied when the ignition is turned on (INT/A) from fuse line F1 of junction unit B1 :when the brake pedal is pressed, the switch closes and sends the operation signal to pin 1 of connector B of M45 . The supply line I30 is also sent to the Check device M45 - pin 2 of connector C - which checks its condition. The check device also controls - pin 7 and pin 5 of connector B - the supply to the side stop lights in the rear lights clusters F30 ed F31 and connector B of the centre rear light cluster F40 from pin 8. The device M45 checks the efficiency of the bulbs and their connections: if faults are detected in the circuit, the 'lights fault' warning light on the instrument panel E50 , pin 7 of connector C, is lit from pin 6 of connector A, while pin 15 of connector A supplies an ignition-operated power supply to the panel through fuse F1 of the junction unit B1 . In this specific case, the control unit also checks the supply line of switch I30 , and if necessary indicates any faults. The braking signal for the switch I30 is sent from the switch to the ABS ( 3309988SeeE7020ABS ) and to the engine management control unit as well ( 3309814SeeE5030PETROL ENGINE ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT or 3309862SeeE5050DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT ).
