DescriptionThe side lights are switched on when the ring nut on the steeringcolumn is turned to the first position, with the ignition in theON position. They can also be turned on by extractingthe key and turning it in the opposite direction - PARK position- keeping the special button pressed.Turning on the side lights also turns onthe number plate lights and numerous other interior lights for passengercompartment lighting and instrument & control lighting (theselines are described and illustrated in the diagrams for the componentsto which they refer). The circuit is protected by two fuses, onefor the right-hand lights, one for the left-hand lights.A warning light in the panel (rev countermodule) indicates that the side lights have been switched on.The correct operation of the side lightsand the number plate lights is controlled by the check device forthe exterior lights located inside the rev counter module. The following faults may occur:blown bulbbulb s.c. to earth or positiveA special failure warning light, also inthe rev counter module, comes on for all other faults in the variouscircuits. This warning light comes on for about 4 seconds when theignition key is turned to MAR, to indicate it is working properly, then it goes off.
Functional description The signal for activating the side lights is sent to pin 3 ofconnector A of the rev counter E15 from switch H1 (POS). This signal reaches the ignition switch H1 (STAZ)from the supply controlled by the ignition (INT) for the line protectedby fuse B11 up to 2/99 or fuse F4 of the additionalfuse box B98B from 2/99. Alternatively - with the key in the PARKposition - the supply arrives directly from the battery (maxifuseIGN of B5 ) up to 2/99 or of B99 from 2/99. The supply for the check device inside E15arrives directly from the battery. (maxifuse J/B2 of B5 up to 2/99 or of B99 from 2/99) to pins 10 and 16 of connectorA, through fuses F2 and F3 of the junction unit B1 ; The former protects the left light circuits, the second protectsthe right light circuit. The check device therefore controls thesupply of the front side lights F10 (left) and F11 (right),the rear side lights F30 (left) and F31 (right) andthe number plate lights F50 and F51 . At the same time, the "side lightson" warning light - inside E15 - is also switched onwith pin 14 of connector A providing the earth. In the case of failures in the circuit, the "lights failure" warning light - inside E15 -comes on, with the supply controlled by the ignition (INT) for theline protected by fuse B11 up to 2/99 or fuse F4 ofthe additional fuse box B98B from 2/99, pin 15 of connectorA. The signal for activating the side lightsis also sent to the speedometer module E10 (pin 5, connectorB).( 3234310SeeE4021SPEEDOMETER )

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
