DescriptionThe windscreen wash/wipe system isoperated by a stalk switch on the right side of the steering wheel. The stalk switch can be set to five positions that correspond todifferent functions:windscreen wiper off (standstill);intermittent operation;continuous slow operation;continuous medium-fast operation;temporary fast operation (unstable stalk position). When the stalk switch is set to intermittentoperation position, four different speeds can be selected by turningthe relevant ring:slow intermittent;medium intermittent;medium-fast intermittent;fast intermittent. The windscreen wiper function is operatedby pulling the stalk switch slightly toward the steering wheel. This action operates the washer pump. If the stalk switch is heldin position, the windscreen wiper also operates (continuous operation). The windscreen wiper carries on working for a few sweeps after the stalkswitch is released. The entire system is governed by an electronicdevice which is responsible for controlling the intermittent functionand also the windscreen wiper motor and washer pump. The windscreen wash/wipe circuit is protectedby a specific fuse and is operated by the ignition-operated relaylocated in the junction unit. The windscreen wiper and washer can be operatedwith the ignition key turned to ON.
Functional description The windscreen wiper control on the steering column switch unit H5 selects thevarious operating modes of the windscreen wash/wipe. The stalk unit H5 is supplied atpin 3 of connector D from the ignition-operated line (INT/A) ofthe relay R1 protected by the fuse F14: both are containedin the junction unit B1 . Depending on the pre-selected function, the stalk unit H5 (connector A) sends the following control signalsto the internal electronic device to the windscreen wiper motorN15:from pin 2 for continuous fast operation: the signal reachesthe motor directly;from pins 3, 4 for continuous slow and medium-fast oeration:the signal arrives from the intermittent device and is then sentto the motorfrom pin 5 for intermittent operation: the signal reaches the intermittent device and is then sent to the motor; this signaldiffers according to adjustment ring position, which adds no resistance, one resistance or two resistances to the line to obain the threedifferent intermittence speeds. The windscreen wiper motor N15 isthen connected to earth. It consists of the actual geared motor, the end of travel contacts and the electronic adjustment and controldevice. When operated, the windscreen washer switchon the steering column switch unit H5 sends two signals frompin 8 and pin 9 of connector A, which reach the pump for operatingthe windscreen washer N20 directly. One of the two signals (pin 6 of connectorA of H5 ) is also sent to the electronic device inside thewindscreen wiper motor N15 which manages the operation ofthe windscreen wiper coupled with the windscreen washer. The same signalis also sent as a go ahead to allow the operation of the headlamp washers( 3233988SeeE3022HEADLAMP WASHER ).

Follow these precautions.769On batteries with an opticam hydrometer, electrolyte level and battery charge status can be monitored qualitativelyby examining the indicator colour:a light, bright colour indicates low electrolytelevel: top up with distilled water;a dark colour without a green area in thecentre indicates that the electrolyte level is correct but chargeis low: recharge the battery;a dark colour with a green area in themiddle indicates that both electrolyte level and charge status arecorrect: no action is necessary. For more details 3238420See subassembly5530 CURRENT GENERATOR . 768Proceed as follows.Check the battery voltage without loadusing the test device recommended by the Service outlets (e.g. 'MICRO360').Depending on the voltage values measured, which define the state of charge of the battery, proceed as follows: If the voltage without load is less than12.10 V, replace the battery ( 32384295530B10battery - r+r ). If the voltage without load is over 12.10V but less than 12.50 V, recharge the battery ( 32384305530B14battery - recharge ). If the voltage without load is over 12.50V, the battery is efficient. If necessary, top up the electrolyte asfollows.Carefully remove the cap strip.Top up with distilled and deionized water, taking care not to allow electrolyte to splash out.768
